Adkins Obit Pic 2Adkins Obit Pic 1Tommy Joe Adkins, 87, of Amarillo, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014.
Services will be at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014, in Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel with Dr. Larry Payne, director of spiritual care at Baptist St. Anthony’s Health Services.  Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
Mr. Adkins was born Feb. 20, 1926, in Haskell to Gladys and BT Adkins.  He graduated from Pampa High School and West Texas State University.  He was drafted at the age of 18 into the Navy and was proud to serve his country during World War II.  He was stationed at New Haven, CT.
Mr. Adkins started at Hopkins as a teacher in 1950 and became principal there and then superintendant.  He consolidated two country schools, Hopkins and Grandview in 1972 to become Grandview-Hopkins.  During his years as an educator he was an assistant Little League baseball coach for the Lefors Yankees.
He was a self-taught guitar player and music was a love.  He started playing guitar professionally at the age of 15.  Mr. Adkins joined the Mello-Aires of Pampa and became leader of the band in 1948.  He continued to play with the Mello-Aires until 1972 when he joined the Dick Morton Orchestra.
Mr. Adkins was an avid golfer and during his career played at the Pampa Country Club.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Fran Adkins, of the home; a son, Steve Adkins and wife Norma of Houston; two daughters, Debbie Morris and husband Jock of Amarillo and Donna Ficken and husband Scot of Wichita Falls; seven grandchildren, Tandie, Shannon, Casey, Jaimee, Jarrod, Kailee and Janae; and 13 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 5-7pm, Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014, at the funeral home.
