Winifred Hayes Sweatt, 89, of Amarillo, died Thursday, April 5, 2012.
Services will be at 11:00 a.m., Monday, April 9, 2012 in Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel with Jim Schmitmeyer, pastor of St. Hyacinth Catholic Church officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
Winnie was born March 25, 1923, in Redford, NY and lived in Saranac, NY, where she met her future husband, Loyd Sweatt in 1941. After Loyd returned from World War II, they were married in Redford, NY, and moved to Troy, NY, where their two oldest children were born. They later moved to Texas, where they settled and had three more children, one who died at birth.
Winnie worked in the school cafeteria in Olton, TX, for many years, then at age 52, attended nursing school and worked for many more years as a nurse. She and Loyd lived in Pampa, TX, and then relocated to Amarillo in later years. Her husband of 58 years died in January 2004. Winnie continued to live alone in Amarillo in her home until this week. After a short stay at BSA and then BSA Hospice, she died quietly on Thursday morning.
Winnie was preceded in death by one special grandson, Philip A. Teichmann.
Survivors include her four children, Bernadette Teichmann and husband Paul of Amarillo, TX, Greg Sweatt and wife Cindy of Parker, CO, Michael Sweatt of Bryan, TX, and Deborah Sweatt of Cedar Crest, NM. She is also survived by five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Winnie had many good friends and wonderful neighbors who enriched her life, including Lucy Martinez and Yolanda Cantu.
In lieu of flowers, Winnie would like contributions to be made to the Philip A. Teichmann Memorial Award in care of Sam Houston Middle School, 815 Independence St., Amarillo, TX 79106.
The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Sunday, April 8, 2012 at the funeral home.
