Laura Elizabeth "Liz" Thomas Melinsky – September 27, 2017

Laura Elizabeth “Liz” Thomas Melinsky, age 87, passed away on September 27, 2017, in Amarillo, Texas. A memorial service for her will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Amarillo on Wednesday, October 4, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. A reception will follow in the church library. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors in Amarillo.
Liz was born in Sedalia, Missouri, on July 16, 1930, to Gene and Alice Brasfield. She graduated from high school in Butler, Missouri. She graduated from Park College in Parkville, Missouri, where she met her first husband, Rev. Richard “Dick” Thomas. They were married in 1952 and remained happily married until his untimely death in December 1975. After Dick’s graduation from Princeton Theological Seminary, they served churches in Oklahoma, Bryan, Texas, and finally Amarillo, Texas, where Dick was senior pastor at Westminster Presbyterian Church.
Liz lived in Oklahoma following Dick’s death for some time, where she obtained her Master’s Degree from Oklahoma University. Later, she lived in Sitka, Alaska, where she worked in administration at Sheldon Jackson College for two years. Then she returned to Amarillo, and shortly thereafter married Mel Melinsky, who had been a longtime member of Westminster also. They were married May 18, 1996. Liz was a loving wife and devoted mother of four children. She also inherited Mel’s three children when they married, whom she considered as her own.
Liz loved rainbows, mountains, dogs, photography of flowers, coffee, a thoughtful sermon that hit all the right notes, and above all, butterflies. She was a teacher, historian, archaeologist, and author, and her needlepoint was feared at fairs across the tri-state area. She was a tireless advocate for women. Liz was endlessly proud of the accomplishments of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, step-children, and step great-grandchildren.
Liz was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Mac Brasfield, her sister, Mary Alice Wheatley, her first husband Rev. Dick Thomas, and great-granddaughter, Lilly Thomas. She is survived by her husband Mel Melinsky, four children, Mike Thomas and wife Carol, of Amarillo, David Thomas and wife, Jennifer, of Albuquerque, NM, Rick Thomas and wife, Anne, of College Station, TX, and Heather Thomas and boyfriend Don Skwierczynski, of Richardson, TX; step-children, Adair Buckner and husband, Dale, of Canyon, TX, Denise Melinsky and husband, Roderick Ram, of the Figi Islands, Kent Melinsky and wife, Ruie, of Amarillo; six grandchildren, three step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren, with other great-grands on the way.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2525 Wimberly Drive, Amarillo, Tx, 79109, Children’s Home of Amarillo, 3400 S. Bowie, Amarillo, TX, 79109, or a favorite charity.
