Elmer Eugene Ashmead – May 6, 2018

Elmer Eugene Ashmead, 87, of Amarillo died Sunday, May 6, 2018.

Services will be at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, May 10, 2018, at Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel.  Burial will follow in Groom Cemetery.  Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Eugene was born October 9, 1930, in Jericho, Texas to Elmer and Ruth Ashmead.  He went into the Army in 1951-1954, where he met Valerie Cook.  She was a telephone operator in Augusta, GA, where he was serving.  They married in 1955, in Dallas, TX.

He was a wood shop teacher at Tascosa High School, the second year they opened.  He retired in 1986.  He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing and guns.  He enjoyed those things with his family.  He also enjoyed working with wood and woodcarving. When he wasn’t hunting and fishing he liked to carve wood.  He loved family most of all.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Valerie.

Survivors include a son, Dale Ashmead; daughter, Pamela Ashmead; son, Chris Ashmead and wife Mary; and four grandchildren, Michael, Valerie, Christopher and Cody.

    We had Mr. Ashmead as a shop teacher and friend. He was a caring and thoughtful teacher and cared for his students. We have fond memories of his teaching our class. Thank you to his family and may he rest with God.
