Catherine Terrell Porter, 99, of Claude, died Friday, April 6, 2018.
Graveside services will be at 1:00 p.m., Monday, April 9, 2018, at Claude Cemetery, in Claude, Texas. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers at Claude, 200 Parks Ave.
Catherine was born on February 6, 1919, to Tom and Ethel Terrell. She graduated from Tyler High School in Tyler, Texas, in 1937. She received a B.S. degree in speech and library science from North Texas Teacher’s College in Denton, Texas, in 1941. Catherine moved to Claude after graduation, and her first teaching position was as librarian at Claude High School. She taught in Panhandle High School during World War II, and then moved back to Claude. She taught in Panhandle and Claude high schools for 36 years as a speech, typing, bookkeeping, journalism, English teacher, as well as, librarian.
She married John Ruel Porter, of Claude, on December 9, 1945, at the First Baptist Church of Chandler. J.R. passed in May 2002.
After retirement from teaching, Catherine worked at the Amarillo Sakowitz Department Store in the gift department.
Catherine was a great cook, and prided herself on cooking wonderful dishes for her family and friends. Her dining room table was always set “just in case.”
Catherine is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia Porter Gordon and Joseph Fisher Gordon, of Tyler, Texas; a grandson, Ben Gordon, of Dallas, Texas; a granddaughter, Holly Gordon Briggs and son-in-law, Matthew Briggs, of Denver; four great-grandchildren, Grace Gordon, Finley Gordon, Fisher Gordon and Luke Briggs; a niece, Jane Austin Chapman and husband Bob Chapman; a nephew Jeff Austin, Jr. and wife Sissy; a nephew Joe Terrell and wife Harriett.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John Ruel Porter; a brother, Jack Terrell; and a sister, Opal Terrell Austin.
The family suggests memorials to First United Methodist Church in Claude, and/or the Richard and Leah Morris Memorial Library.
