Bill J. Barbee, 88, of Amarillo, passed away peacefully on April 21, 2018. He was born in Comanche, Texas on April 14, 1930, to Mary Dodson Barbee and John Barbee. He grew up in Texas, attended Texas Tech where he played football, and graduated in 1951 with a degree in Petroleum Geology. After graduating, Bill entered the Navy, graduated from Officer Candidate School, and served as a Combat Information Officer operating in the Western Pacific.
Upon completing his service to the Navy in April of 1956, Bill went to work for Seaboard Oil Company in Amarillo. Virginia Anne Frisbie opened the door for him the morning he interviewed, and their meeting sparked the beginning of a relationship that would last a lifetime. Bill and Virginia were married on March 15, 1958, at Polk Street Methodist Church in Amarillo. They had three daughters, Jennifer, Janie, and Mindy. Bill loved his family, his work, and time spent with friends and family in Colorado hiking and fishing. Bill worked for over 59 years as an independent geologist in the oil and gas business, and was recently recognized for 50 years of membership in the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church since 1961 and served as an elder.
Bill is survived by his wife of 60 years, Virginia, and their three daughters, Jennifer Kelley (Ken) of Amarillo, Janie Smith (Curtis) of Amarillo, and Mindy Gandy (Matt) of Memphis, Tennessee. Grandchildren include Justin Bragg, Jordan Riley Alexander (Michael), Anne Christian Riley, Sarah Smith Bowden (Cliff), Allison Smith, Barrett Smith, Aubrey Smith, and Mia Gandy. Great grandchildren include Emory Alexander, Riley Darnell, Chloe Darnell, Logan Bowden, and Colton Bowden.
Memorial services will be at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2018 in Westminster Presbyterian Church with Nick Garner, associate pastor, officiating. Private burial will be in Llano Cemetery.
