Frances Pearl DeVito

Frances Pearl DeVito, age 94, of Amarillo, passed away in the comfort of her home on Sept. 24, 2018. She was born July 25, 1924 in Vega, Texas to Charles and Elizabeth Slutz. Her husband, Nick, says, “I could not have married a better woman. She was the most wonderful wife!” Frances and Nick met at a USO dance in Amarillo in 1945 and soon thereafter started their 73 year marriage. She worked for Clowe and Cowan until Nick got out of the military. Frances then proudly became a “home engineer” to take care of their home and children. If there was a degree for that, she would’ve had a doctorate. She was the kind of neighbor anyone would want, always helping neighbors in need. The love of Christ was evident in how she took care of family and neighbors. Frances loved growing flowers, playing the piano, and singing in the church choir at San Jacinto United Methodist, where she was a member for 67 years.

Frances is survived by her husband, Nicholas(Nick)DeVito of Amarillo; son, Mark DeVito and wife Vicki of Charlotte, NC; daughter, Kathy Schweitzer of Bushland, TX; brother, Marvin Slutz and wife Clara of Vega, TX; sister, Jeanette Treadaway of Mineola, TX; 6 beloved grandchildren, Lydia Stokes, Andrew DeVito, Kate Maloney, James DeVito, Anna Nellikappalill, and Jacob Schweitzer; 10 great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Pat Cassidy; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her son, Louis DeVito; five brothers Melvin, Raymond, Carl, Glen, and Ralph Slutz; sister, Marie Loyd; and son-in-law Gary Schweitzer.

There will be a visitation Sunday Sept. 30, from 6-7 pm at Boxwell Brothers, 2800 Paramount.

Family graveside service is 10:00 am, Oct. 1 at Memorial Park Cemetery followed by a memorial service at 11:30 am at Covenant Fellowship Church, 8501 S. Coulter, with the Rev. Stephen Gaines officiating.

The family suggests memorials be to Covenant Fellowship Church or BSA Hospice of the Southwest, 5211 SW 9th, Ste. 100.

Special thanks go to Frances’ hospice nurse, Janna Colvin, and all the other hospice workers for their loving care.

Fanny was a sweetheart that I was blessed to know.. I loved her as if she were my own Aunt. On Sunday Sept 23rd we celebrated her and Nick’s 73rd Anniversary. She died the next day. I got my hug from her on Sunday not realizing it would be my last. I am praying for all the family, but especially Nick. He was the epitome of a good Christian husband who was true to his faith. He said he made a vow to love, honor , and protect Fanny until death us do part. He and Fanny had the best Christain Marriage I ever knew. I am praying for the family, but they ar strong and we all know where Fanny is now. We all will miss her, but we know she is happy in the presence of the Lord.. What more could we ask? Love to all the family, Bernadette

I loved my aunt Fanny and was blessed to spend some extra time with her at the reunion. We wandered and visited and rested. We talked about many things. It was like talking to her when my Gramma was still here. She had such a peace and joy in her. I’m praying extra for Nick and I’m so sorry for your loss Kathy, Anna and Jacob. I love you guys. Peace and comfort, test in the joy of the Lord.

Lovers of Frances…what a blessing to have known such a saint on this earth, and you closest were given such a gift. The knowledge that the gift has now been returned to the Giver, is somehow just. She will be so much happier waiting there for all of you with Jesus (and Louis). All my love!
