Wayne Purcell was born in Amarillo to J.R. and Mary Purcell on July 15, 1947.  He graduated from Palo Duro High School and attended Amarillo College and West Texas State University.  He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War as a communications officer.  During his service, he was stationed in Pensacola, FL; Panama; and Nicosia, Cyprus. In civilian life, Wayne owned Wayne Purcell Photography where he specialized in weddings and portraitures. In his later years, he was employed by Texas Workforce Commissions as an accounts examiner.

Seeking a rose for a bride’s portrait, Wayne walked into Shelton’s Flowers, where he met the shopgirl, Bobby Koesjan, who soon became the love of his life. He and Bobby married on May 20, 1978.  They were each other’s best friend and enjoyed 42 years of marriage.  Wayne’s hobbies were playing snooker and pool.  In fact, he was the pool shark at the Amarillo Senior Citizen’s Center where he won numerous pool tournaments.  Having an artistic talent, he recently returned to mastering the skills of pottery-making.

Wayne’s biggest accomplishment was his devotion to Bobby and family. He also enjoyed the companionship of his faithful Welsh corgis, Buster and Daisy.  The Lord welcomed home this good and faithful servant on February 6, 2019.

Preceded in death by his parents, Wayne is survived by his wife, his sister, Doris Adkins of Abilene and his extended family.

  1. Hello Bobby Purcell and family:

My name is Arthur Trafford and I use to play pool with Wayne at the downtown YMCA in Amarillo around 64 to 66. I am sad to hear of his death. I enjoyed hearing that you two had a VERY GOOD marriage and a loving relationship!!!

Wayne had a gentle and quiet spirit, never heard his use profanity or treat females wrong. He won most of the games played against him at the YMCA.

I perceive Wayne and Boddy would have been loving parents and grandparents!!! Life is a MYSTERY, but we have to consider what happened or didn’t happen, are BLESSINGS from God, either way!

    Sincerely,
