Walter Lee Jones, age 87, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 1, 2020, in Amarillo, TX.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. – 7:30 P.M., Wednesday, June 3, 2020, at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home. Memorial services will be at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, June 4, 2020, at Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel. Military rites will be provided by Volleys for Veterans. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, Amarillo.

Walter was born on May 10, 1933, in Tryon, OK, to Orvel and Zola Jones. In 1951, as a senior in high school, he joined the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He was in the service from 1951-1954 stationed at the Kisarazu AFB in Japan. On September 10, 1954 he married his high school sweetheart Arena Welch in Guthrie, OK and was married for 65 years. After getting married, he worked for Douglas Aircraft in Tulsa, OK from 1954-1960. Then he worked for the FAA from 1960-1988 as a radar technician. After retiring in 1988, he and Arena enjoyed traveling the world which included over 20 cruises, road trips with family, and many trips on his Gold Wing motorcycle with family and friends.

Walter belonged to the Panhandle Road Riders Club, Top Wings Motorcycle Club, and the Mustang Antique Car Club, having fully restored a 1965 Mustang.

He is survived by his wife, Arena; three daughters, Sheryl and husband Gene Brown of Canyon, TX, Annette and husband Robert Muir of Celina, TX, and Terri and husband Kent Sharp of Celina, TX; sister, Darlene and husband J.W. Kerby of Sapulpa, OK; seven grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

  3. Walter was one of my favorite persons. I have fond memories of Gold Wing trips with Walter and Arena. My sincere condolences to Arena and their family over this loss.
