Walter Daniel Carpenter, 84, passed away on Monday, December 16, 2019 in Amarillo, TX.

Walter was born in Wilmington, Massachusetts on October 23, 1935 to Frank George Carpenter and Mary Madeline (White) Carpenter.  He was the youngest of 10 children.  After High School graduation in 1952, Walter joined the US Air Force.

While serving at Druex AB outside of Paris, France, Walter met the love of his life, Elaine Anita (Bolduc) Carpenter.  They celebrated 60 years of marriage on January 12, 2019.  Walter and Elaine had 3 children. Valerie, born in 1959; John, born in 1960; and Diane, born in 1962.

Walter served 26 years in the United States Air Force and enjoyed military life very much.  He served in many locations around the world including:  Dreux AB – outside of Paris, France (X2);  Minot AFB – Grand Forks, North Dakota; Otis AFB – Cape Cod, Massachusetts; Lackland AFB (x2) – San Antonio, Texas; Ellsworth AFB – Rapid City, South Dakota;  Clark AFB – NW of  Manila, Philippines; Takhli  Royal Thai AFB, Thailand (during the Vietnam War);  Altus AFB-Altus, Oklahoma; and Torrejon AB – Madrid, Spain.

Walter retired in February of 1979 as a Master Sargent in San Antonio, Texas.  Walter began a career working for JCPenney as Manager of a Warehouse and Distribution Center in Corpus Christi, Texas.

In 1982, Walter received a promotion from JCPenney, and was transferred to Houston, Texas.  Walter and Elaine enjoyed living in Houston for 9 years.

After his second retirement, Walter and Elaine moved to Amarillo, Texas, in 1991.  His daughter Diane and family welcomed them to town.

Walter and Elaine enjoyed traveling with Family and Friends. The Hale Koa Hotel on Waikiki Beach in Honolulu, Hawaii was a favorite destination of theirs.  They traveled on many cruises with great friends and enjoyed life together.

Walter traveled to New England, in September of this year, with Elaine, Diane and longtime family friend Justina Essing. Walter was able to spend time with his son John and family.  He visited his birth town of Wilmington, Massachusetts and met with his brother Paul. Paul’s wife, Barbara, had invited many relatives over to their home to visit with Walter and his family.  A five- day side trip to Cape Cod followed.  Walter and family stayed at a wonderful vacation home, where everyone had fun at the beach.  He loved watching all the grand and great-grandchildren playing and laughing with each other. Walter would later remark how much he really enjoyed the trip.

Walter is survived by his wife, Elaine and their 3 children: Daughter Valerie and her husband Ronald Uribe of Litchfield Park, AZ; Son John and his wife Maria Carpenter of Thompson, CT; and Daughter Diane and her husband Michael Meyers of Amarillo, TX. Walter had 7 Grandchildren: Michael and Diane Uribe; Jason, Stephen and Nicholas Carpenter; and Cameron and Connor Meyers.  And 4 Great Grandchildren: Grace and Jack Carpenter; and Sofia and Jace Carpenter.  He is also survived by his brother Paul Norman Carpenter of Wilmington, MA.

Services will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2020 at 1:00 PM in the chapel at Saint Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Amarillo, Texas. 4100 S Coulter Drive, Amarillo, Texas 79109.
