Starlin “L.R.” Mitchell, 88, of Amarillo died Friday, Sept. 20, 2013.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013, in Bell Avenue Baptist Church with Danny Logan officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
L.R. was born Dec. 4, 1924, in Hereford to R.L. and Bessie Edwards Mitchell. He married Carol Waldman in 1948.
L.R. served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He helped set up the 38th Parallel in Korea in 1946. He was honorably discharged as a master sergeant with a Purple Heart.
He owned and operated L.R. Mitchell Painting Co. for more than 35 years. He also owned the Twin Willows Bait Shop until last year. He was a senior charter member of Bell Avenue Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol, in 1999.
Survivors include a daughter, Sherrie Kirk and husband Philip of Amarillo; two sons, Larry Mitchell and wife Dian and Stephen Mitchell and wife Rita, all of Amarillo; a brother, Jack Mitchell & wife Barbara of Amarillo; a sister, Audrey Hamilton of Las Cruces, N.M.; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials be to Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 26, P.O. Box 864, Amarillo, TX 79105.
