She grew up there and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School. After graduation, she attended Colorado University in Boulder, CO; Lindenwood in Saint Charles, MO; University of Texas in Austin, TX; Tobe Coburn School in New York City, majoring in Fashion Design and Home Economics. After college, she worked at Neiman Marcus in downtown Dallas.
She met the love of her life, Fred H. Cariker, Jr. of Childress, at UT Austin, and they married on June 9, 1951 in San Antonio. They moved to Amarillo in July 1951 and enjoyed 58 years together. Shirley worked for a short time at Sun Oil Company and Lady Pat, but devoted most of her life to raising her two girls and being a devoted wife.
Shirley was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to all. An avid volunteer, Shirley contributed countless hours of service to the St. Anthony’s Hospital Auxiliary in the gift shop, St. Andrew’s Church, and was recognized as a 50-year member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. She was an expert seamstress, master cook, and loved sharing her talents and creativity with those around her. Shirley was a wonderful advisor and was never too busy to help someone out. She continuously set a strong example of the value of hard work, love of family and deep faith in the Lord. All who knew her will always treasure and remember her kindness, patience, thoughtfulness, positive attitude, and her beautiful smile. Shirley never met a stranger and will be dearly missed by all.
