Shirley Mae Melton, 82, of Amarillo, died Monday, Nov. 26, 2012.
Services will be at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, in South Georgia Baptist Church with Bob Miller officiating. Private family burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
Mrs. Melton went home to be with the Lord and her beloved husband, Bobby, after a short illness. She was surrounded by her family.
Mrs. Melton was born Nov. 16, 1930, in Waynoka, Oklahoma, to Samuel and Bessie Washburn. She married B.J. Melton of Clovis, New Mexico on Sept. 17, 1950, in Canadian. Mrs. Melton was a resident of Amarillo and avid church member, helping found South Georgia Baptist Church.
Mom, your arms were always open when we needed a hug. Your heart understood when we needed a friend. Your gentle eyes were stern when we needed a lesson. Your strength and love has guided us and gave us wings to fly. Love, Carolyn, Connie and Bobby.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob Melton on July 18, 2010; two brothers, Harold and Lawrence; and two sisters, Lelia and Vivian.
Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn and husband Pete Lessenger of Houston and Connie Melton of Amarillo; a son, Bobby Melton and wife Cheryl of Ft. Worth; seven grandchildren, Eric Johnson of Des Moines, IA, Tony Johnson and wife Valerie of Kerrville, Nathan Johnson of Ada, OK, Brandie and Natasha Melton, B.J., Melton, Jr.. and wife Jamie and Kalee Melton, all of Ft. Worth, and Casey Melton of Amarillo; five great-grandchildren, Charlie Melton, Brighten Melton, Amri Melton, Giuliana Johnson, and London Johnson; and a brother, Eugene Washburn of Marietta, Oklahoma.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to South Georgia Baptist Church, 5209 S. Georgia, Amarillo, TX 79110; or to Odyssey Hospice, 6900 W. I-40, #150, Amarillo, TX 79106.
