Nichols Obit PhotoRuth A. Nichols, 96, of Amarillo died, Sunday, Nov. 24, 2013.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013, in Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel with Jeff Messer, chaplain of Childers Place, officiating.  Burial will be in Ochiltree Cemetery in Perryton. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Ruth was born April 10, 1917, in Beaver County, Okla., on her parents’ homesteaded land. She was one of seven children born to Rueben Clayton Nichols and Ocie Mumma Nichols.

Ruth graduated from Perryton High School, where she loved playing on the girls’ basketball team. She attended beauty school and worked as a beautician in Pampa.

At the outset of World War II, Ruth left Pampa to work in Wichita, Kan., at the Boeing Aircraft Plant installing equipment in the warplanes. After a short time, she moved on to Seattle and worked for Boeing there

She opened her Mona Lisa Hairdressing Studio in Seattle in 1946. Ruth closed her business in 1953, returned to Texas and assisted in the care of her elderly parents. At that time, she made a career change and began work at Nunn Electric in Amarillo and remained there until retirement in 1984.

Ruth loved using leisure time to cook, garden, and travel and to take classes at Amarillo College. She learned the florist business and would help out at busy times for the florists. She also spent a lot of time caring for others and visiting those who were ill.

Ruth will be greatly missed by her family.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Emmette “Pete” and William; and four sisters, Helen Turner, Gladys Brooks, Lillian Neilson and Letha Branum.

Survivors include ten nieces and nephews; many great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to Hospice Care of the Southwest, 6600 Kilgore Drive, Ste. 110, Amarillo, TX 79106; or your favorite charity.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m., Friday, Nov. 29, 2013, at the funeral home.
