Pamela Baber Kinnan, 76, of Amarillo, TX passed peacefully on March 5, 2021.

Memorial services will be Thursday, March 11, 2021, at 4:00 P.M., at Lake Tanglewood Community Church 106 Tanglewood Drive. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Mrs. Kinnan was born in Tokoma Park, Maryland on April 1, 1944.  She is a graduate of Robert E. Lee High School, in Tyler, Texas, and North Texas State University, in Denton, Texas.  Where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics.   She married Lawrence Gregory Kinnan in Tyler, Texas in 1967.  They moved to Amarillo in 1977.

She had a lifetime teaching certificate with a vocational endorsement.  Upon college graduation, she taught for 3 years.  She chose to stay home for the next 18 years to be a housewife, mother and community volunteer.  She was employed with Amarillo ISD, as an educator since 1984.  In 1989, she developed and implemented a district wide program for pregnant and parenting students.  Mrs. Kinnan facilitated a high-quality program of education and services for pregnant and parenting students and their children.  She wrote grants, taught parenting and child development, directed the on-campus child development center and transportation of students and their children.  She presented workshops at state and local conferences and consulted with entities interested in various aspects of teen parent programs.  Mrs. Kinnan retired in 2015.

She was a member of Lake Tanglewood Community Church, and the Junior League of Amarillo.  She served on the board of the Lake Tanglewood Community Library and various other state and community boards and advisory groups.

Mrs. Kinnan received the Karli Dye Award, presented by Planned Parenthood of Amarillo and the Texas Panhandle in recognition of her long-time volunteer service, the Mae Carvell Award, presented by the Venture Club “for efforts to advance the status of women in our community”, Teacher of the Year Award, and the Service Provider Merit Award, presented by the Women’s Coalition for Change “Focus on Poverty”.  Her North Heights TeenAge Pregnancy and Parenting Program won the Best of Texas Award presented by the Corporate Fund for Children.  She was in “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers”.

She is survived by her husband, Greg Kinnan; daughter, Monica K. Terrell, and husband, Drew, of Amarillo; son, Cortney D. Kinnan and wife, Amanda, of New Braunfels, Texas; two granddaughters, Abby Terrell and Corinne Kinnan; three grandsons, Thomas Terrell, Cade Kinnan, and Decker Kinnan; a sister, Cyndie Coulter of Georgetown, Texas; and her mother-in-law, Mary Kinnan of Irving, Texas.

  1. Mrs. Kinnan was an amazing woman. I had the pleasure of meeting her in 2008 when I was enrolled at North Heights. She truly cared about the students and her laughter could light up the room. I am deeply saddened by this, but I want her legacy to live on as she has touched soo many hearts. If it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t be where I am today!

    She was a great help to Planned Parenthood for many years and leader in assisting those with unplanned pregnancies.

    What an incredible woman. Pam had such a huge heart. She cared about human beings…..especially those that are disadvantaged.

    I loved reading about your wonderful mom. Just reading about her accomplishments has been an inspiration to me today! This explains your highly energetic, enthusiastic, and loving personality.   21. Our world has just now changed forever. It feels empty without Pam in it. Pam was my mentor. She taught me everything I know about teaching,and particularly about the teen parent programs in Texas. I admired everything about her. She was a ball of fire, so smart, talented, yet loving and caring. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She is someone who definitely made our world a better place by her presence in it.
