Oscar was born to Oscar and Margaret Fields in Terrell, Texas, on December 25, 1933.  After graduation from Terrell High School, he attended Marion Military Academy in Marion, Alabama, and then Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, where he received a Bachelor’s Degree and a law degree from SMU School of Law.  After service in the U.S. Army, Oscar began his law practice in Amarillo, Texas in 1957.  He was a founding partner in the law firm of Stokes and Fields where he practiced for more than thirty years.  Oscar completed his law practice of counsel to the Templeton Smithee Law Firm and retired in 2002.  Oscar was licensed to practice before all of the Texas State Courts, the Federal District Courts in the Northern and Western Districts of Texas, the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court.

Oscar loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman.  His favorite sport was quail hunting.  He and Bob Templeton and Bob’s father, Tom Templeton, had quail leases for many years and some of the finest pointer bird dogs anyone ever had.  Oscar owned farms and ranches in Armstrong, Donley, Collingsworth, and Hall Counties in Texas where he was known to use good wildlife conservation practices.

Oscar was a licensed instrument airplane pilot and owned and flew his own airplanes for nearly 50 years without an accident.  He logged more than 4400 hours at the controls of many types of aircraft.  He owned an Air Force T-34 Aircraft and he was a licensed Air Show Formation Pilot.  He flew in many air shows around the country.

Oscar was predeceased by his wife, Karen, and is survived by his daughters, Melissa Rickard of Friendswood, Texas, Julie Kent of Midland, Texas, Jaynie Guerrero of Georgetown, Texas, his stepdaughter, Malee Hundsdorfer, of Cedar Park, Texas, and by seven grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
