Mary Lou Taylor Montgomery, 82, passed away Monday evening, February 22, 2021.  Her family was at her side.

At Mary Lou’s request, and due to covid precautions, a private family service will be held.  Family friend and minister, Alton Cheatwood, will officiate.  Burial will follow at the Stinnett Cemetery, Stinnett, Texas.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any memorials be made to a church of your preference or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (see www.stjude.org).

Mary Lou was the eldest child born to Wayne Reich and Mary Lila (Miller) Taylor.  She was born in Wheeler, Texas on July 24, 1938.  She grew up in Roger Mills County, Oklahoma on her family’s farm, a portion of which was originally homesteaded by her grandfather in 1901.  The farm remains in her family today.  Mary Lou attended schools in Reydon, Oklahoma.  Some of the friendships she had as a child endured throughout her life.

On July 17, 1956, Mary Lou married Bobby Montgomery in Wellington, Texas.  Shortly after they married, they moved to Stinnett, Texas where Bobby began teaching in the Stinnett school system.  They lived and worked in the Stinnett community until 2016.  Mary Lou was a beautician for 35 years, and she owned and operated her own shop most of that time.  As their health and the medical profession changed, requiring more doctor visits, Bobby and Mary Lou moved to Amarillo, Texas but they still considered Stinnett to be their true home.

Mary Lou was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her nephew, Jonathan Wayne Taylor.

Mary Lou is survived by her two sons, Bobby Wayne Montgomery and wife Montee, Stinnett, and Timothy Mark Montgomery, Houston, Texas; two grandsons, Matthew Wayne Montgomery and wife Vanessa, Fort Worth, Texas, and Mark Allen Montgomery and wife Leia, Soldotna, Alaska; four great-grandchildren, Kinley Taylor and Cooper Daniel Montgomery, Soldotna, and Zackery Allen and Evan Wayne Montgomery, Fort Worth; two brothers, Glenn Reich Taylor and wife Sandy, Newport News, Virginia, and McClarren Wayne ‘Mac’ Taylor and wife Joan, Elk City, Oklahoma; and one nephew and one niece, Christopher Reich Taylor and wife Elizabeth, St Andrews, Scotland, and Kimberly Anne (Taylor) Hailer and husband Benjamin, Newport News.

Mary Lou enjoyed working in a beauty shop environment as it enabled substantial camaraderie with other women.  Throughout her life she especially enjoyed the company of elderly women.  She found them to be particularly entertaining due to their humor and their balanced perspective on life in general.  The girls at the quilting bee knew how to cook, sew, tell jokes and have fun.  Some of her happiest memories were times spent with friends and clients from her beauty shop days.

Mary Lou loved to travel, and she encouraged her sons to follow their dreams and seek adventure.  She thought it was important to prepare for the future, but it was more critical to ‘live in the day’.  Most of all, Mary Lou wanted to spend time with her family, especially her grandsons and great grandchildren.

The family would like to express sincerest gratitude to Patricia Olona, Kathy Jackson and Claire Johnson, of the True Blessings organization. They enabled Mary Lou’s peaceful and beautiful transition from her earthly life.

Services are entrusted to Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd, Amarillo, Texas.

Condolences on the loss of Mary Lou. She was so much fun to be around. I can still recall that Mary Lou cut my hair, and several others, on our Senior Trip. That started a trend for me. Whenever I came home from college, a trip to see Mary Lou was always put on the schedule. Got to see her routinely for a lot of years. Needed the hair cut, but loved the visit even more. She was special. Sincerely, Colin
