Mary Jo Hopson, 90, of Plano, TX left us to be with the Lord on February 26, 2021.

A graveside remembrance will be held at 3:00 P.M. at West Park Cemetery in Hereford, Texas on April 17, 2021. Arrangements made by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Mary Jo was born on January 28, 1931, in Hereford, Texas, to Elmer L. and Eunice C. Mathies. She grew up in Hereford, TX, and Reseda, California. She graduated from Hereford High School and attended the University of Southern California. She later moved to Amarillo, married James M. Bowen and they had 3 children. She married A. Glenn Hopson on January 28, 1982. They resided in Moriarty, NM before moving to Plano, TX in 2015.

Mary Jo loved serving her community whether in Amarillo where she worked with the Camp Fire Girls and directed the Amarillo Girl Scouts summer camp or in Moriarty where she was Director of Senior Centers in Torrance County. Mary Jo was involved in the Methodist church and the PTA’s of the schools her children attended. She was also a member of Beta Sigma Phi, a women’s organization.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Hopson, her parents, brother, Elmer L. Mathies, Jr., brother, Tom C. Mathies, daughter, Janice Lynn Bowen Gunther, and son, Ronald James Bowen.

Mary Jo is survived by her daughter, Denise Cable and husband Ken, their children Blake Cable, Randa Macdonald Kircher, husband Dalen and grandchildren Autumn and Will. She is also survived by stepdaughters, Edana Harvey and Joie King and her husband Rocky. She had 4 grandchildren, 15 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren through Glenn, her late husband’s family. She loved all her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her refrigerator and dresser top were full of all their pictures. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Margaret Mathies and her children, Quinn Mathies and his children Ann and Jacob, and Cara Mathies Coless, her husband Lou and their children Keith and Cameron.

The family requests memorials donations are sent to Faith Presbyterian Hospice located at the Boone Pickens Center, 12477 Merit Drive, Dallas, TX 75251.

  1. I have many fond memories of my son Craig and Jo and Jim’s son Ronnie being classmates, beginning at Olsen Park Elementary. We had many sporting events and other school activities to attend together. I shall remember her dedication to serving, especially to young people in Amarillo. My sincere sympathy to Jo’s family members.
