Margaritte passed away October 12, 2020.   Funeral arrangements by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, with private burial at Llano Cemetery.   A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date.  Memorials should be to the Maverick Boys Club.

Margaritte was born in Texarkana, Arkansas, on October 19, 1922 to Mattie Pauline Odum, and birth father, Albert Tavender. When Mattie married Edward Turner, he adopted Margaritte, but Mattie died on Aug. 2, 1926. Since Edward worked construction all over the country, he took her with him, but would foster her out to homes while he worked. They lived in NM, CO, MT, ID, UT, & NV.  In 1929, she was 7 when Edward died in Reno NV. His brother, John Turner, from Canyon,TX, went and brought her back to Amarillo, and put her into the Children’s Home in Amarillo.  She stayed there until she was almost 12, when her half sister, Ethyl, came to Amarillo & took her to Tucumcari, NM, in 1934.  When Ethyl found Margaritte could receive money through Edward’s social security, she was then boarded out to anyone that would take her.  She graduated from Tucumcari High School in 1941, after she married Mike Garcia on March 25, 1941. They were married for 55 years until his passing on July 26, 1996.

She found her true family adopting the Garcia Clan, moving to Amarillo in 1943, and having 4 kids, John, Phillip, Bennie, and Elaine.  With the boys going to the Maverick Boys Club, Mike became a coach and she the scorekeeper, plus any other role needed. They were like parents to most of the boys.  Margaritte was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the club.  She had an amazing memory for names, families, birthdays, early Amarillo, and all the Garcia history and relatives.  She was the most loving and giving Mother, and Grandmother, but also the best woman this family has ever known.  She also had an adopted family she loved dearly, Wayne and Ann Sturdivant, with kids Steven, Michael, Susan, Karen, and Stacey.

She was preceded in death by husband Mike, son John, grandson Darin, and Wayne Sturdivant.

She is survived by son Phil (Leslie) of Antioch, TN, son Bennie (Danna) of Amarillo, daughter Elaine (Marco) Castillo of Amarillo, daughter-in-law Sue of Amarillo. She loved her in-laws as if they were her own kids. Grandchildren Cody Garcia (Nashville), Tracee Garcia (Antioch), Erin (Darrell) Gardner (Okla City), Caroline Lister (Amarillo).  Great-grandchildren are Major Gardner (Okla City), Robert Tucker and America Lister of Amarillo, and Tristan Hart (TN).

  1. Sounds like she was a precious sole. I did not know her, but her obituary sounds like she finally found family that cared for her
