Margaret Jane Nelson, 83, of Amarillo, TX died Tuesday, March 9, 2021.

Memorial services will be at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 13, 2021, at Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel. Burial will be private.  Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Margaret was born on October 24, 1937 in Amarillo, TX to William and Margaruite Rodgers.

MJ had a lifetime of community involvement and volunteerism in the Amarillo area.  This started at Amarillo High School as a cheerleader and developed into true community altruism. She was an elementary school teacher, a part of the Amarillo High School Alumni Association, Amarillo area chapter representative for Kappa Alpha Theta, a former president of the Amarillo Symphony, former president of Christian Women’s Fellowship, she held various leadership positions in the Junior League of Amarillo, as well as maintaining membership in numerous civic and community organizations.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Nelson.

Survivors include a daughter, Meg Thornton and husband Bill, of Fruita, CO; son, Rod Nelson and wife Missy, of Cleburne, TX; and grandson, Brady Nelson.

  1. I met MJ through our PEO Chapter. She was a wonderful, caring person. My thoughts and prayers are with each of you.

  2. Doesn’t seem like soooo many years ago that I often got to see your mon and dad at Girl Scouting events/activities. AND– not that long ago Meg you were involved in scouting and fun times at Camp Kiwanis.
    Sorry for your loss and know that you will be seeing your mom and dad again. Shirley Thomas and long ago known as Winston!

  3. Bill and I always enjoyed visiting with MJ and Frank at First Christian Church. They were so friendly . Sorry for your loss.

  4. MJ was a sweet caring soul. She had a huge heart and a beautiful smile. She will be missed.

  5. Meg – Seems such a short time ago I had a chance to visit with you and your mom at an AHS class reunion weekend. Years have certainly gone by quickly. I’m so sorry for your loss. Will keep you and your family in prayer.

  6. I am truly sorry to hear that M.J. passed away. I have wonderful memories of times my husband Bill and I were with M.J. and Frank. M.J. contributed in many ways to our community, and her pleasant way of working and sharing with others will be missed. My heart goes out to each family member during this difficult time. May God surround you with His love and comfort.

  7. MJ was a natural leader. Her sweet smile and gentle nature could motivate even those less inclined to give their best for a cause. MJ chaired Art Force for Amarillo College students and faculty. Through her leadership one year, Art Force supported not only Amarillo College but also arts students at a community college in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. She loved others, and we will always love her and her family.

  8. I am surprised to hear of the passing of MJ. I have known her many years and always enjoyed being around her.

    She will be missed. Not only because of her kindness, but because of her gentle demeanor she bestowed on those she encountered.

    She is dancing in joy with her Creator.

  9. I’m so sorry for your loss. I always enjoyed conversations with M.J. whenever I saw her at civic events. She is now reunited with her dear husband. May this give you comfort and peace.
