John Earl Simpson, 72, of Wheeler, TX passed away on November 24, 2020.

Private family services were held.

John was born December 26, 1947 in Amarillo, TX to Earl and Mary Ann Simpson. John graduated from Amarillo High School in 1966. He then attended Amarillo College and while he was there, he was a manager of the boys basketball team. John then moved to Levelland, TX to attend South Plains College from 1968-1970 where he earned an Associate Degree in Landscape Irrigation Design. In 1970, John moved to Irving, TX where he worked for an irrigation design company. John helped to design and install the irrigation system at Texas Stadium in the early ‘70s. John lived in Irving for about 7 years before moving to Wheeler, TX. John Earl worked at the First United Methodist Church of Wheeler until he retired in 2005.

John loved everything sports! He watched thousands of games on television as well as in person over the years. He especially loved watching the Dallas Cowboys and the Texas Rangers. His favorite college teams were Texas Tech, Texas A & M, and The University of Kentucky basketball team. His favorite high school team was the Wheeler Mustangs.

John Earl kept statistics on major league football, basketball and baseball teams as well as college teams. He was able to tell you how a team ranked and winners of the championship games over the years. He also kept the statistics for middle and high school students in Wheeler. He loved the Wheeler Mustangs attending most home games and as many away games as possible from the 1970’s to 2010. John was known well in Wheeler by many adults and kids alike.

John loved his family especially his sisters and nieces and nephews. He loved listening to country and gospel music. His all time favorite performer was Tanya Tucker. He loved living in Wheeler, even as a teenager when he spent summers with his grandparents, Elmer and Lela Simpson.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Mary Ann Simpson, and Mildred Simpson.

Survivors include his sisters, Mary Mignon Lance and husband, Donnie of Rockwall, Susan Gordon and husband, Rick of Lubbock; Nieces Michelle Lance Matsler of Marietta, GA and Christian Lance Schreiner of Forney, TX; Nephews J Scott Gordon and William David Gordon, both of Lubbock.

The family requests in lieu of flowers donations be made to your favorite charity in memory of John Earl Simpson.

  1. John earl was always yelling “Johnny!” Every time I saw him and never would stop reminding me that we shouldn’t have lost to Crosbyton and we should have won state in basketball. Then he never let my sister and brother live it down either! Thank you John for always being kind and keeping up with us! May you Rest In Peace!

  3. John Earl followed our 3 boys from Little League thru football play-offs. Had an opinion of their ability and if they played up to it no matter what sport! Still asked about them after30 years. had a mind like a Steele Trap for sports and stats. He will be missed by this community😘
