John Adam Maag, III, 76, of Amarillo, Texas, died on February 18, 2021 of Covid pneumonia at Vibra Hospital.

John was born on March 25, 1944 in Fort Worth Texas to John Adam Maag, Jr. and Emma Jene Maag. He attended SMU where he played football under Coach Hayden Fry for 4 years.  He graduated from the University of Texas in 1971.  John worked at Bell Helicopter for 33 years.

He loved all kinds of music, but his favorites were always the blues, country and rock and roll.  To this day, his old mix tapes are very popular with those lucky enough to have one.  He also loved old Volkswagens, and for a good portion of his life, he had at least one in the garage.  John was a sucker for any animal, from his countless dogs and cats to any animal he thought might need a little help.  Fishing was his passion his entire life.  He started young in Ft Worth with his lifelong friend Bill Carrell and continued to fish until the end.  If he wasn’t fishing, he was watching fishing shows or shopping for fishing gear.  Black bass was what he loved to fish for, most of which were thrown back so he could catch them again.  When public demand was strong, he would keep enough fish to feed the neighbors at a fish fry.  But most importantly, John was an honest, stand up guy who always did the right thing and despite his reputation as “mean Johnny Maag”, he couldn’t have been kinder.

John is survived by his Bride of 49 years, Sally and their son, Josh Maag, his wife, Christina and grandkids, Dylan and Vivian of Boise, Id; His daughter, Sydney Maag and grandson Wylie Sansbury of NY; a sister, Jenne Maag of NY.

In honor of John the family requests that friends and family go fishing.
