Joe quietly left us all on Monday, June 15, 2020.

Born and raised in Amarillo, and fondly called JoeJoe by many, he was a gentle giant with a warm, caring heart the size of Texas. He loved entertaining others with his guitar, gardening, and caring for his farm and horses.

His education at New Mexico Military Institute and the University of Texas led him into a career in business construction consulting with projects throughout Texas and in Saudi Arabia ending with contracts at Pantex.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Tanya Perkins Sawyers, his mother, Mary Wells Sawyers, and his brother, John Wells Sawyers.

He is survived by his father, John I. Sawyers, his sister and her husband, Mary and Peter Van Ness of Santa Fe, his sister Susan Alice Sawyers of Amarillo, his nephew and wife, John C and Vanessa Sawyers & 3 great-nieces of Houston and his goddaughter, McKellie Rexroat of Colleyville.

Plans for a celebration of Joe’s life will be announced at a later date.

  1. We really had some fun at NMMI, and shared my house in Amarillo for a while. You always had a smile and loved to hear you play Carolina on My Mind. I also went to grade school with Tanya. So glad you reunite in heaven.

  2. Sometimes you meet people in your life and love them immediately. They light up the world with positivity, laughter, fun, and nothing but goodwill. They feel and care about what’s going on in your life and minimize what’s going on in their lives. That was our JoeJoe.
JoeJoe, we will miss you terribly. I’m so thankful we had time with you not long ago for Mckellie’s graduation from Auburn. What a special time.
My sincere condolences to your family and friends. You will be missed. But we all find comfort knowing you will be reunited with your precious Tanya.

  3. Joe Joe was always calm, always encouraging, and always positive! He will be missed by so many! I remember him leaving Colleyville and how everyone felt! How could he leave when so many wanted him to stay? City life without Tanya just wasn’t for him I decided! He was a dream husband to her, a fabulous Godfather to McKellie, and a great friend to all the rest of us! It makes me smile to know he’s finally with his soulmate again!

Peace to you, Joe Joe!!! ❤️❤️❤️
    Much love,
    Ann

  4. Our precious Joe Joe was so very very special to McKellie and me. He celebrated all our special events with us. Joe Joe and I spoke every Sunday. He was a confidant, friend and a member of our family. The love between Joe Joe and Tata (Tonya) was like no other! I celebrate the reunion with your Tonya. You left us too soon. Your memories will remain close in our hearts.

  5. I am so sad that my gentle giant passed. Joe Joe and Tanya were special friends. They were such a big part of my life in Texas. I have so many memories of all of our times together. Whenever I was upset about a big decision, Joe would calm me, and we would work through it! He treasured Tonya, and together we all treasured his special God daughter Mckellie! My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this sad time.

  6. I can’t believe my dear long time friend is gone. You always made me laugh with your quick wit and one-liners! So easy to talk to, I loved to hear you play the guitar and sing, you were so smart and not a bad golfer! I’m so grateful I have fun stories to share, stories that always make my heart smile. I will miss you Joe. 😢💙

  7. You will be missed Joe. You taught me everything I know about Quality. You were so much more to me than a “consultant” you were my friend. My dear sweet friend. I will utilize your knowledge forever. See you when I get there.
