Joe Don Spencer, 68, of Amarillo, TX died Tuesday, March 17, 2020.

Memorial services will be held at a later date at Hillside Christian Church chapel.

Joe was born June 25, 1951, in Breckenridge, TX to Paul and Lorna Spencer.  He was in the 1969 graduating class of Roscoe High School in Roscoe, TX.  Joe then attended Ranger Junior College.

He married Karla Sells on October 13, 1973, in Pampa, TX.

In his early years, Joe worked at Holiday Rambler.  Later he worked for Mapco for more than twenty-three years in Fritch, TX, and more than twenty years for Pioneer Natural Resources from which he retired.  He was a reliable employee.

During retirement Joe enjoyed playing golf and loved to meet at Henry D’s with his fellow Pioneer Natural Resources retirees.  He loved his family, NASCAR, and mowing the lawn.

Joe attended Hillside Christian Church.

He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Spencer; and a niece Tammy Jo Petty.

Survivors include his wife, Karla Spencer, of Amarillo, TX; a son, Ricky Spencer and wife Ashely, of Columbus, GA; a daughter, Tracie Spencer, of Amarillo, TX; his mother, Lorna Mae “Nanny” Spencer, of Lubbock, TX; a sister, Linda Petty and husband Charles, of Lubbock, TX; five grandchildren, Brennan Spencer, Teagan Spencer, Ethan Colley, Emma Colley, and Duncan Spencer; two nieces, Paula Mercer and husband Bill, of Lubbock, TX, and Teresa Vaughn and husband Chris; four grand-nephews; and one great-niece.

  1. Karla and family, Joe Don was one of my 1969 Roscoe High School classmates. Long before he met you, Karla, and started a family, be assured that he was always one of the nicest guys; you completed him though. Just a few months ago when you were both at our 50th class reunion, we didn’t know he was sick; he let us know soon after. We have all reconnected through this hurtful time; and we want to still be connected with you. God give you all that you and your family need in these days to come.

  3. We graduated from Roscoe High in 1969, fifty years later we see each other again at our class reunion. He is the same sweet guy with the same sweet smile that says more with a nod than most people say with a paragraph. Condolences to his wife, Karla and kids.

  4. I have known Joe Don for most of his life. You will not ever find a better individual. Joe Don was one of my brothers Stan best friends. I know they are having a great time right now. Those golden years of life are gone forever only to soon.

  5. I just wanted to send my deepest sympathy and love to the family. I have the fondest memories of Joe Don, aka “Bird” , one of my first boy friends. He was always a perfect gentleman, and always a good friend.
