Jerry F. Johnson, BSN, RN, 66, of Amarillo, TX passed away in his home on Saturday, June 15, 2019, after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Services will be at 3:00 p.m., Friday, June 21, 2019, at Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel with Davlyn Duesterhaus officiating.  Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Jerry was born January 10, 1953, in Syracuse, KS to Gladys and Dallas Johnson.  He graduated Syracuse High School and went on to Kansas State University and then transferred to Marymount College, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Nursing.  While at Marymount, he met his wife, Diana Goscha.  They recently celebrated their 42nd wedding anniversary.

He started his career at the VA Hospital in Albuquerque, NM, and continued nursing after moving to Amarillo in 1984 with his primary focus in home health.  He later moved on to administration and retired after being the director of BSA Home Care and Hospice for twenty-five years.  During his years as administrator, his primary goal was patient care and he had a very caring heart not only for his patients but his employees as well.

His hobbies included repurposing items or other’s trash (also known as dumpster diving), golfing, dancing, fishing, camping with his wife in their campers, Sally Jo and Salem 1.  He was devoted to his family and enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s activities.  He was lovingly referred to as PeePaw.  He was the go-to for any tools and handyman advice and spent many hours tinkering in his man cave (shop) and was always available to help family and friends with any project.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Gilbert and Frank Johnson; and his father-in-law, Sal Goscha.

He is survived by his wife Diana; his beloved dog, Sadie; his mother-in-law, Jo Goscha; his children, Adam and Ashley Johnson, Laura and Eddie Gerber; and his six grandchildren, Emma, Lily, Madison, Maleah, Taylor, and Corban.  He also had many extended family and special friends.

    Dear Diana and family,
I am so sorry concerning Jerry’s passing. When I was in early high school I was fortunate to know Jerry through frequent visits to Syracuse visiting Grandmother and other relatives. I always thought of Jerry as the young brother I never had being a only child. He was a great listener and a devoted friend. Jerry’s mother, Gladys, was like another mother to me and my earliest memories of the Johnson family was the period of time Gladys and Dallas and my family lived in a duplex house in Holly before Jerry was born. I am pleased Jerry selected a profession to help others and continue his skills and talent as a caregiver and compassionate listener to those in the final stages of life. As a survivor of cancer I am certain many have been blessed with Jerry’s support and care.
Thank you Jerry! You will be missed.
