Janice Sladek

Janice Sladek, 88, of Stratford, TX passed from this life into the loving arms of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on May 8, 2020.

She was born at home on October 22,1931 in Royse City, Texas to Anna Lois Sledge Fisher and Paschal Wayne Fisher.  She graduated from Royse City High School in 1948.  Janice then went to work for Employers Casualty Insurance in Dallas, Texas.  She soon met the love of her life, Billy Gene Sladek and married January 26, 1951, at the home of a Baptist preacher in Dallas, Texas.

They moved to Stratford in March 1967. They enjoyed raising the family in such a wonderful community.  Janice was very involved in the family activities.  She loved the Stratford Elks and at times was the first one at the gym for basketball games. Just like her husband, Janice was enthusiastic about scouting, including both Boy and Girl Scouts. She went on many outdoor trips; her favorite was to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. Janice even took a Girl Scout troop to Washington, D.C. and survived!  She was awarded “Citizen of the Year” in 1982.

Janice loved the Dallas Mavericks and enjoyed sharing the stats with her siblings. She also had a guilty pleasure for Dr. Pepper and always had a stash in the outside refrigerator. Janice was an amazing seamstress and loved making clothes for her own children and grandchildren. She even made her daughter’s wedding dress.

As her children grew up, she became active in mission trips. Janice traveled with Feed The Children and with Faith Medical Missions. She went on 54 trips going to all parts of the world including going down the Amazon River, Africa, Thailand, Romania, and South America to name a few. She would make peanut butter sandwiches each morning and give them to the kids that came to the medical clinics. The joy she brought to the children was immeasurable. After Janice decided she could not travel any longer she would send hand-stitched clothes, toys, and flip-flops shoes.

One of her greatest joys was church and the church family.  She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church. She served many years on the mission board and always volunteered for VBS.  She had tremendous faith in work to further the kingdom. She also volunteered at the Community Thrift Store and went to SCOT Hall to play dominoes, especially Mexican train. Janice also loved to help serve the meals at the church or SCOT Hall.

Those left to cherish her memory are: Rex Sladek, Blake (Marie) Sladek, both of Stratford, Belinda (Byron) Sawyer of San Angelo and Craig (Julie) of Salem, Oregon. In addition, she leaves behind nine grandchildren: Jennifer (Chris) Anderson, Holly Sladek, Amy (Johnathan) Hataway, Dalton Sladek, Alisha Sladek, Bailee Sawyer, Britton (Laura) Sawyer, Austin Sladek, and Daniel, a.k.a, Diggs, Sladek. She had five great-grandchildren: Landon Anderson, Brantley Anderson, Blakelee Sladek, Riley Hataway, and Paislee Hataway.  Her surviving siblings include: Wayne (Joyce) Fisher, Glenn (Mary) Fisher, Bernice Sladek, and Sue Ann Kohn (Benny) who all live in the Dallas area. Janice also had several nieces and nephews. Janice was known by many names: Mother, Mom, Graniece, Niece, and Gegaw, but loved them all.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband Bill, a brother Robert Fisher, a sister Mary Francis Fisher, and brother-in-law Jim Sladek.

The family wishes to thank the staff and nurses of Memorial Nursing and Rehab Center in Dumas.  We especially thank Curtis Bishop and Kathy Bagby with their help during numerous Face Time Calls.

In lieu of flowers, the family asked for donations to be made to Janice’s favorite charities.  Faith Medical Missions: P.O. 1. Janice, through her servant heart and heart for missions, probably impacted more lives than we can imagine. She shared the love of Jesus everywhere she went and the seeds that she sowed have grown and multiplied exponentially. We visited us two times in Nicaragua and both students and adults loved her so much because she loved them so much and asked nothing in return. Our times of visiting her in Stratford were a blessing due to her hospitality and love for our ministry. Of course our conversations were always missions focused whether they were international or local. Her DNA was a servant heart, humble spirit, and sharing the love of Jesus wherever she went. Our lives were blessed by not only knowing her but also calling her our friend. Your race on earth is finished, you fought the good fight and kept the faith and the stars in your crown will be many. Rest with your family and your Savior. Not “goodbye” but “see you later.” We love you.

  2. Janice was an inspiration. She gave herself fully to the Lord and to seeing other come to know HIm. She gave of herself to us for so many years, welcoming us into her home, sending special things she had made with us to give away on the field, books, cards, and notes. We loved her stories of family and mission work and will miss her very much! Our prayers are with family and friends!
