Janet Louise John Tullar, born February 4, 1929, in Warren, Ohio, died peacefully on December 8, 2020, at just shy of 92 in Amarillo, TX. She was living at The Ware, where she resided with her husband of 71 years, Douglas Eugene Tullar.

Janet grew up in Pennsylvania and West Virginia, the daughter of Bishop Edward and Isabelle John. She attended Roberts Wesleyan College and Seattle Pacific College graduating from Seattle Pacific College in 1966 after spending time at home in upstate New York and Seattle raising her daughters.

Janet made good use of her degrees. Her degree in Elementary Education led her to cutting edge methods in kindergarten where her students learned reading and Spanish, and in gifted education where she created a lab-style classroom and taught project-based learning and computer programming skills to students much ahead of educational trends. Her degree in Home Economics sparked her interests in cooking, tailoring, textile art, knitting, crocheting, and painting with oils. She excelled in all. Her quilts are works of art and her crocheted scarves and lap blankets were treasures not only to her family but also to those who received her prayer shawls.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents, Bishop Edward Clarence John and Isabelle Johnston Gass John; and her brother, Edward Clarence John, Jr. (Bud).

She is survived by her husband, Douglas Eugene Tullar of Amarillo, TX; her sister, Shirley John Rogers (Samuel) of Georgetown, TX; and her children, Linda Marlene Tullar Vesey (Lawrence) of Chesapeake, VA, and Brenda Tullar Wilkins (Guy) of Amarillo, TX. She also leaves 5 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

There will be a Celebration of Life at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to Snack Pack 4 Kids, Amarillo, or Seattle Pacific University: Student Scholarships.

  2. Dear Doug, Linda and Brenda,
I am sadden to hear the news of Janet’s passing. I remember her being such a warm and caring person who had a remarkable imprint on her daughters! I pray for God’s comfort and peace to fill each of you during this time of sadness and loss. As the days go on you will no doubt discover that the curtain between heaven and earth is very thin when you find yourselves doing things you used to do together or for her. She lives on in every remembrance of her. May the Lord bless each of you, your children and grandchildren.
