Jane Holt York – August 22, 2012

Jane Holt York, 85, of Amarillo, died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2012.
Services will be at 11:00 a.m., Friday, August 24, 2012, in Polk Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kevin Deckard, associate pastor, and Jane’s nephew, the Rev. John Ott, officiating.  Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
Jane was born June 1, 1927, to Charles and Ethel Holt.  She was born, raised, and attended public schools in Amarillo and remained a loyal Amarillo High “Sandie.”  At AHS class reunions, she accompanied the reunion choirs for “Battle Hymn of the Republic.”
After graduating from Northwestern University in Chicago, Jane was a civilian military worker at various military bases in Germany.  Her path nearly crossed with her future husband’s while he was serving in the Air Force.  Soon after returning to Amarillo, her path crossed with John York’s at Polk Street United Methodist Church in the Beacon Sunday school class for young single people.  It was “love at first sight.”  They were married in 1956, and then joined the Home Builders Sunday school class for young couples.  This began a lifelong ministry of service, including Jane’s piano and bell ringing talents and loyalty.
John’s Air Force service caused them to travel the world for many years until his retirement led him back to Amarillo as a project trainer for Southwestern Public Service.  Being a friend, neighbor, brave citizen and community volunteer filled her life and those she touched.  She coordinated activities for the Sunshine Club for the Blind, following in her mother’s footsteps.  She and John were among founding members of the Retired Military Officers Association, and she remained active until very recently.
Family, friends and neighbors were a great source of fun and enjoyment.  She loved giving and sharing with them.  Many Amarillo friends have numerous stories and memories.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Charles “Chuck” Holt, Jr.; and her beloved husband, Col. John K. York.
Survivors include her sister-in-law, Dorit Holt of Chester, VA; a nephew, Chris Holt and wife Nancy, and sons, Christopher and Colin, all of Chester, VA;  a nephew, Rev. John Ott and wife Kathy, and their daughters and spouses, Stephanie and Bamillo, Lindsey and Lincoln, and Alisha and Kent, all of Roanoke, VA;  a niece, JoAnn Hinton and husband Keith, and their children, John, Jeff and wife Ashley, and Angie, all of Roanoke, VA; and Amarillo friends, Peggy and Ben Buckner, Bonnie and George Snell, and Diane and Charles Steed.
The family suggests memorials to Polk St. United Methodist Church, 1401 South Polk St., Amarillo, TX 79101; or to American Council for the Blind, 2730 S. Grand, Amarillo, TX 79103.
Viewing will be from 8:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 23, 2012 and Friday, Aug. 24, 2012, from 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home.
