Jan Brister Thoman

Barbara Jan Brister Thoman, 83, of Amarillo, TX passed away on February 12, 2020.

Memorial services will be at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, February 15, 2020, at First Baptist Church, with Dr. Howard K. Batson officiating. Private burial will be at Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Jan was born on October 23, 1936 in Muskogee, OK to Greeley and Elizabeth Mounger. She was a professor at Amarillo College for 35 years. She married Fred Brister on September 9, 1955, and he preceded her in death in 1995. She married Roy Thoman in 2005.

Jan Brister Thoman, or “Gigi”, was the life of the party, a true firecracker! She was fun, strong-willed, sassy, entertaining and always making others laugh. She entertained everyone she was around with her animated stories and (sometimes overly) honest commentary.

She loved and cared deeply for her grandchildren and was certainly their biggest fan. She was always so proud of them and quick to let others know.

She was an avid sports fan. She knew facts about many teams and players. Those close to her knew your phone call before or during a game would be short, sweet and to the point because she had a game to watch. She especially liked the Oklahoma Sooners, even though she claimed she would cheer for the Oklahoma State Cowboys for her grandchildren so long as it wasn’t Bedlam.

She was a lifelong learner and avid reader with multiple books started at once. She enjoyed gardening, bird watching and antique shopping. She had a soft spot in her heart for her pets, especially her cats. She loved to cook for others and owned almost every cookbook written.

Fredericksburg, Texas and the Texas hill-country were her escape every summer with family and close friends. Her contagious joy and sweet spirit will be greatly missed.

Survivors include her husband, Roy Thoman, of the home; son, Ben Brister and wife Shanna, of Amarillo, TX; grandchildren, Bradyn Powell and husband James, Benton Brister, Brant Brister and wife Kaylee; and one great-grandson on the way.
