Ida Ethel Thomas – July 15, 2011

Ida E. Thomas, 96, of Amarillo, died Friday, July 15, 2011.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, July 25, 2011 at Washington Avenue Christian Church with Jim Shelburne and Ed Modrick officiating.  Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
Mrs. Thomas was born on July 20, 1914 in Fort Sumner, NM to Jim and Dona Elder.
She married Herbert Thomas on June 18, 1932 in Clovis, NM.  They lived in Amarillo from 1940-1950 where they owned the Thomas Bakery.  She earned her BA at East Central State University in Ada, Oklahoma and her MA at Cal State Fullerton.  She was a professor in the Business Department of Fullerton Junior College for about 25 years, retiring in 1983.  She and Herb spent their retirement years in Sequim, WA.  She returned to Amarillo in 2004 where she lived at Craig Retirement Community and Childers Place.  She was a member of Washington Avenue Christian Church.
Ida was a State Tennis Champion twice.  She won New Mexico Girls High School championship at 16 years of age, and, in 1949 she won the Texas Junior College Women’s championship.  She enjoyed golf, bowling, and traveling.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers; and two sisters.
Survivors include her daughter, Alice Skinner and husband Forrest of Amarillo; sisters-in-law, Jean Cantwell of Riverside, CA and Joyce Elder of Midland, TX; and granddaughter, Laurie Allen and husband Matt of Austin, TX; and several nieces and nephews.
