George Lee Cobb, 64, of Amarillo, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2012.
A memorial service will be at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012, at First Baptist Church with Dr. Howard K. Batson, pastor, officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
George was born Nov. 11, 1947, in Amarillo, to Vernon and Lorene Cobb. He graduated from Amarillo High School in 1966 where he played football and baseball. George attended the University of Texas on a football athletic scholarship and was a senior for Coach Darrell Royal on the 1969 National Championship Longhorn team. He came back to coach at his alma mater in 1973, and retired in 2006. Amarillo High was Coach Cobb’s only coaching job. His time at AHS included teaching economics and history. His impact on the Golden Sandstorm will be long remembered.
He married Alice Palmer on Feb. 18, 1984 in Amarillo. George was a member of First Baptist Church.
He is preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Wendell Cobb and Harold Cobb.
Survivors include his wife, Alice Cobb, of the home; two sons, Ty Cobb and wife Keri of Oklahoma City, Okla. and Brian Cobb of Amarillo; a daughter, Jana Cobb of Amarillo; three grandchildren, James, Seth and Parker; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Viewing will be all day Friday at the funeral home.
