Dennis Joseph Spies, 69, passed away Sunday, September 11, 2011.
A memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, September 15, 2011 in Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel with the Reverend Jo Roberts Mann officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
Dennis was born December 20, 1941 in Hays, Kansas to the late Joseph and Germaine Spies.
Dennis was married to Vada Spies and they had three children. She preceded him in death in 1985. He married Linda Spies in Amarillo, Texas in 1990.
Dennis served in the United States Air Force and was stationed in Alberta, Canada as a radio operator and was honorably discharged. He attended West Texas University and obtained a degree in journalism while working for the Amarillo Globe News as a copy editor. He went on to a 30 year career with the newspaper retiring as the managing editor. He spent the last several years with the Department of Veteran’s Affairs working in the human resources department.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Spies; three children, Quentin Spies and wife Deonna, Tracy Stewart and husband Jeffery, and Angie Yeary and husband Kyle; three stepchildren, Cindy Cordova and husband Fred, Barbara Parker, Scott Parker and wife Dana; a brother, Dave Spies and wife Elaine; two sisters, Mary Nightstar and Ruth Schumm; 17 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Dennis’ motto was “My mother taught me to always do the right thing.” He is loved. He was our light.
