Our beloved Daddy, Grandad, Great-Grandad, Uncle, and Friend is now having the best days of his long life. He has claimed his reward of eternal life in Christ. We can only imagine his joy as he met his best friend and Savior on Friday, March 29, 2019.

Born 98 years ago on November 7, 1920, Daddy was a walking history book. He experienced Model T’s, horses and wagons, the Depression, the Dust Bowl, working in the Civilian Conservation Corps, the Navy from the beginning to the end of WWII in the South Pacific and serving for 34 years beyond, marriage and three daughters.

His name, Theophilous, means “Lover of God.” He said that from an early age, he knew God was with him and that he never knew fear.

Meeting him in heaven are his parents, Clyde B. Cummings and Mattie Faye Baker; his brother, NL; his beloved wife of 56 years, Vergie; a beloved granddaughter, Sara Shackelford; and son-in-law, Dan Shackelford.

The multi-generational family remembering our hero are his daughters: Renee Shackelford-Walls (David), Rita Rogers (Andy), and Katie McLemore (Rick). Grandchildren: Dana Evans (Chris), Shawn Miller (Courtney), Bryson Wright (Brandi), Lori Irvin (Shawn) and Brandon Shackelford. Great-grandchildren: Trey Evans (Courtney), Trent Evans, Tanner Miller, Tori and Taylor Underwood, Izabella Partin-Shackelford, Emma Lee Volden, Aleeyah and Aiden Shackelford. Great-great grandchildren are Clayton and Kasen Evans. His sisters, Clydie Miller and Dorothy Myers. Numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Daddy was a man who lived the walk of a Christian. Always honorable, a man of faith and strong character, selfless, patient, and unconditionally loving.
Daddy’s patience knew no bounds: Teaching 3 girls to drive, tightening skates, fixing bicycles, coming and going of boyfriends, driving us around when we were sick until we could go to sleep, and teaching us to fish. His French toast and snow ice cream were family treats. He taught all of us to love nature and raised us to know how to change tires and take care of our homes. Some of the sayings he accidentally came up with kept us laughing (“Contraband” for “cumberbund”). Daddy was an optimist and always in a good mood. Never said he was tired. His kind words of wisdom when we made mistakes: “Let that be a lesson to you, daughter.”

His legacy is one to be honored and will be the marker for those of us who were blessed by his life and love.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 P.M. – 5:00 P.M., Sunday, March 31, 2019, at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, it would please Daddy for contributions to be made to the Texas Panhandle War Memorial Center, 4111 S. Georgia, Amarillo, TX 79110.

In 2009, he married Tommie White.

  1. My grandmother always spoke very fondly of her brother. When speaking with his daughter Rene on the phone, I choked up…..I didn’t realize I would be sharing the same pain so soon. My hope is that my Grandmother and Uncle Theo are laughing and remembering youthful times again. Love to all, Katrina.

  3. FAMILY OF TED:

MY WIFE AND I REMEMBER TED AS OUR MYF LEADER BACK IN 1956 AND MANY YEARS AFTERWARDS AT FOREST HILL METHODIST CHURCH. HE WAS ALWAYS OUTGOING AND LOVING TO EVERYBODY. THE DOOR WAS ALWAYS OPEN AT TED AND VERGIE’S HOME. LOTS OF WARM MEMORIES AND LOVE HIM MUCH.

  4. Had the honor of serving with Chief Cummings at the Navy & Marine Corp. Reserve Center Amarillo. One of the finest persons I have ever known. Thoughts and prayers to the family and friends. Fair winds and following seas, Chief.

  5. I’m truly sorry for the loss the family has suffered. Please accept my condolences. There maybe nothing more painful than losing a family member. But its always strengthens us to know that others care as well, but more importantly our Creator God cares. Notice his promise to us during this time we’re dealing with. He tells us that he will swallow up death forever and he will wipe the tears from all faces ( Isiah 25:8 ). Our prayers are with the family.
