Clarence Dean Holmes, 87, of Amarillo, TX died Monday, March 8, 2021.

Graveside services will be at 3:00 p.m., Thursday, March 11, 2021, at Dreamland Cemetery in Canyon, TX.  Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Clarence was born into a large family on October 31, 1933, in Fisher County, TX to Y.C. and Annie Holmes.  He had four sisters and five brothers, Clarence being the third oldest.    He was an adventurous kid, and at age 14, twice hitchhiked to Boys Ranch to see a friend.  Clarence was in the 1951 graduating class of Littlefield High School.

He married Joy Kirk Patterson on September 9, 1989, in Amarillo, TX.  Some of his fondest memories and good times included trips with Joy to Canada, Europe, and South Dakota.  They also enjoyed spending time at the Red River Family Encampment, where he was awarded a 20+ service award, as well as camping with George and Betty Vinson with their travel trailer.

Clarence was always a salesman.  He started his career first selling salve as a child and later began a career in insurance sales.  Clarence also worked on houses, refurbishing, and renting properties.  He was resourceful and pinched his pennies.

He was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters.

Survivors include his wife, Joy Holmes, of Amarillo, TX; five daughters, Donna Couper and husband Fred, of West Hartford, CT, Karla Rutherford and husband Fred, of Ft. Worth, TX, Cheryl Holmes and husband Mike, of League City, TX, Terri Giddens and husband Ted, of Canyon, TX, and Karen Wyly and husband Criss, of Friona, TX; two sons, Kent Patterson and wife Brenda, of Canyon, TX, and Bruce Patterson and wife Carol, of Wichita Falls, TX; a brother, Jimmy Holmes and wife Kathy, of Hereford, TX; twenty-one grandchildren; and 37 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 P.M. – 6:00 P.M., Wednesday, March 10, 2021, at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home.

  1. I loved Clarence so much, always greeted me and called me by name. In later years he called me Marge. I love being your Marge. Love, Cheryl and Ron Walton.
