Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Church at Quail Creek in Amarillo with his sons, Michael and Paul Pinkston officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery.  Military rites are by DAV Chapter 26.  Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home, 2800 Paramount in Amarillo.
By all accounts, Chester Hopkins was an extraordinarily devoted husband, father and friend.  He loved hunting and was also well known as a skilled cook and baker.  Many knew Chester as their first contact at the Church at Quail Creek, where he greeted members and visitors faithfully for over 30 years.  He often enjoyed a simple meal or conversation with longstanding friends.
In 2007, Chester lost his soul mate, Noell Hopkins, whom he met in 1979 and married in 1983.  Together they shared a special life and love, but more importantly shared a deep faith in and relationship with Jesus Christ.  Chester took care of Noell in a way that has inspired their sons as husbands and fathers.
Chester was born Sept. 30, 1924, to Chester and Willie Hopkins in Anson, Texas, grew up on a farm near Honey Grove, Texas and graduated from Honey Grove High School in 1942.  He served the U.S. Army in the South Pacific during World War II and again during the Korean War.   He was honorably discharged in 1951.  From there he embarked on a 34-year career at Pantex, finally retiring on the last day of 1986.  For the next 5 years he served on the Auxiliary of BSA (and High Plains) Hospital followed by another 8 years on staff at Memorial Park Funeral Home.
Survivors include his three sons, Michael Pinkston and wife Kathi of San Antonio, Paul Pinkston and wife Karen of Amarillo, and Christian Pinkston and wife Erica of Annandale, VA.   His nine grandchildren include Ashley, Jordan, Joshua, Lindsey, Brooklyn, Madeleine, Aidan, Bowdin and Sophia, along with great grandsons Beau and Bennett.  Chester was preceded in death by his wife, Francis Noell Hopkins, as well as brothers Merrell and Turner Hopkins and sister Kathleen Whitten.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

  1. Chester was a wonderful christian man and door greeter. I will truly miss his Sunday morning smiles and hugs.

  2. Oh, how we loved Chester…We admired him, he was a Christian man, and you could see it, without any doubt..Charles helped Chester at the church door, greeting people every Sunday morning. I once saw this little quote…”Sometimes memories sneak out of my eyes and roll down my cheeks” But, I know there is shouting in heaven, Noel is there to greet him…

  3. Paul, Karen, Michael, Kathi, Christian, Erica & families,
Chester & Noell were such a huge part of our lives there and great neighbors and friends. Our hearts are heavy and praying for you even though we can’t make the trip there.
