Betsy Gail Goen, 69, of Amarillo, TX passed away on April 10, 2021.

Memorial services will be at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, April 15, 2021, in the Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Betsy Goen was a vibrant light that will not be extinguished. She was born October 14, 1951, in Amarillo, TX to Commander Gerald Trapp and his wife, Geraldine. After the tragic passing of Commander Gerald Trapp, Betsy, her brother, Steve, and her sister, Terry, were raised by Geraldine and her husband James Stavenhagen. Geraldine passed when Betsy was a freshman in high school and she was raised by James Stavenhagen and his wife, Virginia, as their own.

Betsy pursued her passion through teaching. Later, she became a Licensed Professional Counselor with her primary focus on counseling children through their struggles.

Betsy married the love of her life, Mark, in 2003. Mark and Betsy devoted their love and time to each other. They enjoyed racquetball, fishing, scuba diving, dirt bike riding and many more adventures.

Lovingly, Betsy raised her sons, Chase and Troy, to love adventures as well. They were her pride and joy. Her love extended to their wives, Julia and Sarah. Her grandchildren held a special place in her heart and she loved nothing more than spending hours playing games, reading, and cuddling with them.

Her family was never just related by blood. Her arms were open to many friends who became family through the years. Her grandson likes to remind us that her neighbors called her, “the crazy lady on the block,” because of her unique, friendly and fun way of doing things.

Through her journey, Betsy walked with God by her side. She was an active member of Family Life Church of Amarillo, Texas. She attended prayer groups, women’s Bible studies, and always loved a chance to travel with her Bible study girls.

Whether stranger or friend, horse or lizard, no one would walk away without a hug and kiss. All who knew Betsy remained touched by the fire of her love and compassion.

Those who will miss Betsy most are her husband Mark; son Troy and wife Sarah; son Chase and wife Julia; sister Terry Burkham; brother Steve Trapp and wife Sherry; Kelly Cooke and wife Charlotte; Lynn and Beverly Johnson; Cathy Burrell; Kent and Melinda Hardage; grandchildren Christian, Trinity, Abbie, Garrett and Emersyn; as well as numerous additional family members and friends.

Betsy’s love for animals was unmatched and evident to all. Therefore, in lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Amarillo SPCA to honor Betsy’s love of animals. Donations can be made at https://www.amarillospcashelter.com
