Bernard (Ben) Joseph McGovern, 60, of Amarillo passed away Wednesday, January 1, 2020.

Ben was born on September 1, 1959 in Towanda, PA to William and Hope McGovern. He graduated from Towanda High and later joined the United States Air Force in April of 1983. He proudly served this great nation for 21 years; serving in both Gulf Wars before retiring in December of 2003. Ben married his best friend, Robin Gesford McGovern on July 13, 1983. He continued his aviation career with Bell Helicopter for 12 years. He later went on to work as a realtor at Century 21 Boston and Company, Walmart as an assistant manager before returning to aeronautics at IAC as a production manager. He was a man of many hats and did everything he could to ensure his family was taken care of.

Ben was a loving, funny, and kindhearted man who gave everything he had to his family. Ben fought a long courageous battle with an aggressive form of cancer, and he never gave up.  His greatest joy was making others happy and inspiring them to strive for the best. He will be sorely missed by his family, friends, coworkers, and neighbors. Ben touched every person that entered his life and his legacy will continue on, as his spirit and memory will be carried with them.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William James McGovern and Hope Caro McGovern. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Robin Gesford McGovern; daughter, Brenda Lynn McGovern; son, Bryan Keith McGovern; two brothers, William Jr. (Billy) McGovern and his wife Peggy McGovern, and Robert (Bob) McGovern and his wife Vicky McGovern; and sister, Linda Rose Henson and her husband Roger Henson, and a niece and many nephews.

In his memory, we ask that any donations be given to St. Jude in his name, as it broke Ben’s heart to see the children suffering from cancer when he went for his treatments.
