Alvin Ross Whitehurst – October 29, 2012


Alvin Ross Whitehurst, 76, of Amarillo, died Monday, Oct. 29, 2012.
A memorial service will be at 4:00 p.m., Friday, Nov. 2, 2012, at Polk St. United Methodist Church with Kevin Deckard, associate pastor, officiating.  Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
Mr. Whitehurst was born July 11, 1936, in a farmhouse on the Black Ranch in Parker County to Tom and Martha Whitehurst.  Mr. Whitehurst played on the 1955 New Mexico All-State All-Star football team.  He played football for OSU and graduated from Texas Tech School of Business.  He married Mary Jane Davidson on Dec. 27, 1955.  Mr. Whitehurst was an entrepreneur, businessman, agri-builder, and owner of Panhandle Steel Buildings and Whitehurst Builders, Inc.   He was elected to the Butler Manufacturing Executive Advisory Council.  He was responsible for building grain elevators and commercial buildings nationwide.  He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Tom and Harold; and a sister, Jerry.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Mary Jane Whitehurst of the home; two daughters, Terisa King and husband Chuck of Amarillo and Trudy Jones of Denver; a son, Todd Whitehurst and wife Leslie of Ft. Worth; a brother, Joe Howard Whitehurst of Portales; a sister, LaHonda Horton of Clovis; seven grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth, Zachary and wife Kristen, Gabriel, Mallory and husband Sam, Noah, Anna and Addison.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be made to American Council for the Blind, 2730 S. Grand, Amarillo, TX 79103, or to the building fund at Polk St. United Methodist Church, 1401 S. Polk St., Amarillo, TX 79101.
