Alvin F. Hicks

Alvin F. Hicks, 88, of Amarillo, TX died on December 27, 2022.

The family will receive friends at Noon on Saturday, January 7, 2023, at Temple Baptist Church. Services will be held at 1:00 P.M., Saturday, January 7, 2023, at Temple Baptist Church with Pastor Scott Higginbotham officiating. Burial will follow at Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Alvin was born in the McMurtry Ranch in Briscoe County, Texas, on August 28, 1934, to Noviee F. And Lorena P. Hicks. Shortly thereafter, his father went into the road building business and later during World War II, his father built air fields across Texas and Oklahoma requiring many moves and different schools for his children. After the war their family was settled in Sweetwater, Texas, and later in Amarillo where Alvin graduated from Amarillo High School in 1951. He went on to Amarillo College receiving an Associates of Science Diploma in 1953. While at Amarillo College, Alvin was active in Delta Pai Omega, National Drama Fraternity, and was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa, National Honor Fraternity.

Alvin then pursued his education at West Texas State College in Canyon, Texas, where he received a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree in 1955. While at W.T.S.C, he was active in the Buffalo Band serving as president in 1954-1955. He was a lifetime member of Kappa Kappa Phi, National Band Fraternity, serving as President of Alphi Phi Chapter in 1954-1955.

Upon graduation from W.T.S.C, Alvin served two years in the U.S. Army forces, Far East, and 8

U. S. Army Commendation Ribbon with Metal Pendant and Citation for meritorious services.

Returning to Amarillo, he went to work for Gilvin-Terrill, Inc., highway contractors, as a timekeeper. He advanced to Vice President of that firm and ended his employment there in 1973 when he purchased controlling interest of Panhandle Gravel West Inc. He became Chief Executive and Operator Officer of that company until he sold it and retired in 1992. During the tenure at Panhandle Gravel, Alvin was active in the Texas Aggregates and Concrete Association headquartered in Austin, Texas. He served as president and chairman of the board of that association in 1980-1981. His business memberships also included the National Aggregation Association, Associated General Contractors of America, Amarillo Chamber of Commerce, Better Business Bureau, Amarillo Executive Association, and the Amarillo Club.

Alvin always had a keen interest in the Arts and had been a supporter of the Amarillo Symphony, the Amarillo Museum of Art, Lone Star Ballet, The Amarillo Little Theater, and West Texas Friends of Fine Arts. He held a lifetime membership in the Texas Panhandle Heritage Foundation.

Alvin served on the Development Council of the Hendrick Home for Children in Abilene, Texas, from 1984 to 1988. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Llano Cemetery Association.

Current fraternal membership includes Accepted Masons of Texas, The Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, and Khiva Shrine, where he was a past president of the Khiva Patrol and past member of the Royal Order of Jesters.

Alvin was truly blessed with many talents. He was a musician, actor, scholar, soldier, businessman, leader, friend, caregiver, and servant. He considered the greatest of these to be his service to the Lord. He was a longtime member of Temple Baptist Church where he served in many capacities. He was an ordained deacon, assistant teacher of Sunday School, president of the J.O.Y club for seniors, and member of various church committees.

Alvin was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, June L. Neie; and nephew, Scott Pollard.

Survivors include a sister, Betty J. Pollard of Olton, TX; a niece, Pamela Pollard, of Olton, TX; a grandniece, Chloe Riggins and her husband Chance Riggins of Lubbock, TX; and other nieces, cousins; and church family.
