Virginia Mae Morton, 84, of Amarillo, TX passed away October 24, 2023.
Visitation will be from 5:30-7:00 PM, Thursday, November 2, 2023 at Boxwell Brothers, 2800 Paramount. Graveside service will be at 10:00 AM, Friday, November 3, 2023 at Llano Cemetery. Memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, November 6, 2023 at Arden Road Baptist Church with Sr. Pastor Aaron Denson as officiant. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors.
Virginia was born October 13, 1939 in Shallowater, TX to Leonard Joseph Richard Winfield and Georgia Mae Risenhoover. She was raised and attended schools in Lubbock, TX. Virginia graduated from Lubbock High School in 1958. She married her school classmate and friend, Bob Morton on May 19, 1961 in Lubbock, TX. She and Bob had their daughter, LeAndra Gay in 1962 then had their son, Richard in 1964. Virginia and her family moved to Amarillo in 1967 from Lubbock. She was a faithful member and former church secretary at Arden Road Baptist Church from 1988-1994 and still continued to attend up to her passing. During that time, she was very active in the AWANA program, Ladies “LACE” Bible Study, and Empty Nesters. She was a former member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church from 1968-1988 where she was also the church secretary for a time and very active in the Girls, Youth Ministries, and WMA. Virginia was a teacher’s aide at Western Plateau Elementary from 1975-1978 and was a clerk/secretary at Western National Life / SIC companies from 1978-1982.
She loved Jesus, her Church, and her Family. She especially loved her grandchildren who
affectionately called her “Grammy.”
Virginia is preceded in death by her parents, Georgia Winfield in 1989; and father, J.R. Winfield in 1993.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Robert E. “Bob” Morton of the home; daughter, LeAnn Morton Hillier and husband Craig of Amarillo, TX; son, Richard Morton and wife Donna of Amarillo, TX; sister, Lenora Gowens and husband Clifford of Wylie, TX; brother, Leonard Winfield, and wife Cindy of Abilene, TX; grandchildren, Hope Hillier of Amarillo, TX, Robert Hillier and wife Elon of Waco, TX, and Aubrey Weatherly and husband Kent of Friona, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family suggests memorials be made to Arden Road Baptist Church Youth Ministries, 6701 Arden Road, Amarillo, TX 79109.
