Our beloved mother, Vera Winters, 100, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 15, 2013 in Amarillo, TX.  She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, friend, and teacher.

Services will be at 3:00 p.m., Thursday, December 19, 2013, in Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel.  Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery.  Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Vera was born in Reynolds, Nebraska to James Foster Gregory and Stella Belle Aughe on October 2, 1913.  She was a long time resident of Borger and moved to Amarillo in her later years.  She married A.C. (Court) Winters on December 21, 1940 in Casper, Wyoming.

Vera taught private kindergarten for 20 years and touched many little lives.  Her joys were cooking and baking for family and friends, as well as gardening.  She was a member of Iris Club, Altrusa Club, Music Club of Borger, and Tri City Community Concert organization.  She was also a long time member of Eastern Star.  Vera was a charter member of Borger’s Wesley United Methodist Church and later St. Paul United Methodist Church in Amarillo.  She sang in the church choir for many years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; 8 siblings; her husband, Court; 2 sons-in-law, Dale Howard and Dick Whitten; and her only granddaughter, Kathryn Howard Adair.

Those survivors include her three daughters, Marcia Howard of Fritch, Mavis Whitten of Lubbock, and Karen and husband Dean McDaniel of Amarillo; three grandsons, Rodney Howard and wife Judy of Argyle, Sean McDaniel and wife Jenny of Amarillo, and Chris McDaniel and wife Kathleen of Amarillo.  She also had seven great-grandchildren, Ashley Boyd, Kendall Hendricks, Kacie McDaniel, Katie Lynn McDaniel, Grayson Adair, Silas McDaniel, and Riley McDaniel; and two great-great-grandchildren, Kinsley and Cailey Hendricks.

Vera’s family wishes to thank all of her caring, devoted caregivers for loving and providing for her during her illness.

The family suggests memorials be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church, 4317 W Interstate 40, Amarillo, TX 79106.
