Tuff was born Jan. 1, 1936, in Vega to Roddy and Irene Harwell. He graduated from Vega High School. He married Joanie Paschel on Sept. 12, 1960. Tuff furthered his education with a bachelor’s degree in economics from West Texas State University. He married his best friend, Gail Brown on Sept. 21, 1985.
He served on the Vega School Board 1978-1985, and was a member of Adrian Methodist Church. Tuff ranched all of his life and was a man of few words but had many friends who all loved him for his cowboy humor and wit.
Survivors include his wife, Gail Harwell, of the home; three daughters, Lee Jones and husband Michael, of Boerne, Jan Reeve and husband Mitch of Hereford, and Tina Hartness of North Richland Hills; a son, James Hal Bearden, of Matador; a brother, Lynn Harwell and wife Joy of Seneca, SC; a sister, Sharon Hobbs of Vega; a nephew he thought of as a son, Colby Harwell; grandchildren, Michelle, Emily, Melissa, Kinsey, Cory, Derek, Holly and Hannah; and 6 great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials be made to Adrian Methodist Church; or to Adrian Volunteer Fire Department.
Viewing will be from Noon – 6:00 p.m., Sunday at the funeral home in Vega.
