Tommy J. Brunson – October 28, 2017

Tommy Julian Brunson, of Amarillo, Texas passed peacefully at his home on October 28th, 2017. He was the youngest son born June 2, 1950, to Charles and Roberta Brunson of Claude, Texas.
Tommy farmed the family land in Armstrong County from the time he was young man until 1986. Growing up on a farm he enjoyed the outdoors and learned how to fix or build anything. He often showed up at friends and families homes with his tools to fix and repair.
Later he would work with Mac Harms and Dick Sheffield and become an excellent trim carpenter. He also worked at Owens Corning Fiberglass as a maintenance mechanic retiring in July 2012, after 30 years of service. Always a man who liked to stay busy he came out of retirement and worked for Jack Sisemore Traveland until recently.
Tommy was a dirt track race car driver who went by the name of  “The Flying Farmer”. He designed and built his own race car and competed professionally for several years. Even after he retired from racing he was fond of watching car racing, especially dirt track.
Tommy was a quiet, simple man who loved people, animals, fishing, traveling. His standard attire was a tee shirt, jeans and tennis shoes along with his genuine smile.
He married Carolyn Denton Brunson on December 4th, 1981. They were a team and did everything together.
Arrangements by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors. There will be no services at his request.  His ashes will be scattered privately.
Saying goodbye are his wife Carolyn, Tom and Christy Grimes, Scott and Melissa Johnson, Andrew and Nicole McWatters of Amarillo, Zack and Katie Grimes of Frisco, TX, Alex and Veronica Grimes of Escondido, California and Evelyn James McWatters of Amarillo.
Special thanks to Accolade Hospice for their loving care. Donations in his memory can be made to the Amarillo Motorsports Hall of Fame.
