Thomas Wilson Winn, better known to his friends as Tom, passed away on Tuesday, September 4, at the VA, at the age of 94.
A memorial service will be at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012, in Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel with Alan Williamson, chaplain, Ware Living Center officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
A resident of Amarillo for more than 65 years, Tom was born on March 6, 1918, in White Deer, Texas, to William and Dixie (Artist) Winn. He graduated from Bellevue High School in 1936 and continued working on farms across the Texas Panhandle and eastern New Mexico area for several years. He joined the Army-Air Force in 1944 and began corresponding with Virginia (Nickel) of South Shore, Kentucky, throughout the final months of World War II. They married after the war ended, on November 20, 1946, and the couple moved to Amarillo. He began working at Russell Stationery and worked there for 42 years, delivering, installing, and repairing office furniture, until he retired in 1990.
Following his retirement, he and his wife traveled to Kentucky to visit family. Tom became an avid fan of his grandsons’ sports teams: from soft soccer to t-ball, baseball to basketball, and even high school soccer and swimming. In addition, he attended an untold number of choir concerts, piano recitals, and orchestra concerts, enjoying the music the boys created.
He is survived by his son, Timothy (Amarillo) and two grandchildren: Alexander (Frankfurt, Germany) and Jonathan (Amarillo). His only surviving sibling is Cecil Winn (Denton). He is preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Virginia (2008) as well as his brother Fred and sisters Mary Simmons, Decla Kelley, and Dolly Winn.
Visitation will be at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors at 2800 Paramount Blvd. on Friday, September 7, 2012, from 5:00-7:00 p.m.
