Thelma Claudine McDaniel Hutchison Smith – December 12, 2017

Thelma Claudine McDaniel Hutchison Smith was born February 2, 1933, and passed away on December 12th at her home in Dumas.
Services will be at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, December 16, 2017, at 6th and Meredith Street Church of Christ with Chris Benson and David Bonner officiating.  Burial will be in Stratford Cemetery.  Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors of Dumas, 500 N. Maddox Ave.
Thelma was always surrounded by a lot of friends.  In her later years, she attended many funerals.  Following one funeral, she remarked that she was going to have to find some younger friends.  She was a member of a troop of senior entertainers known as the Darlin’ Ding-a-lings.  She made a point of entertaining at all area nursing homes, knowing she would most likely end up in one.  She was an active member of the Red Hat Society and a longtime member of the 6th and Meredith Street Church of Christ.
Thelma was once appalled when she learned her nephew, Mike, had placed his beloved dog in a freezer upon the dog’s death.  She told family members that if she went missing to look for her in the freezer.  For years when people inquired about her health she would reply she was just one bark away from the freezer.
Thelma attended primary and secondary school in Kerrick and Stratford, Texas and college in Goodwell, Oklahoma.  She always bragged she was first in her 8th grade class in Kerrick.  Eventually, her children learned she was the only one in her class.
Thelma enjoyed being around friends and family.  She loved going to the farm where she was born and staying in her cabin in New Mexico.
A woman of immense energy, when Thelma began to complain of a lack of energy she learned the electrical part of her heart would no longer work without a pacemaker.  Her pacemaker came with a lifetime warranty and she wondered what exactly that meant for her. So, Thelma departed this life on December 12, 2017, at the age of 84 – obviously the pacemaker failed.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Claude and Minna McDaniel, her brother, Fred McDaniel, husband, Duane Smith, and son, Al Smith.
She is survived by two sons and their wives, Ron and Lana Hutchison of Longview, Texas and Scott and Nita Hutchison of Lubbock, daughters, Sherri Hutchison of Arnold, Missouri and Terry and husband Larry Macomber, of Dennison, Texas and daughter-in-law, Stephnie Smith of Dumas.  Thelma has many nieces and nephews, but was especially close to her brothers’ children, Mike McDaniel of Kerrick and Patti McDaniel of Aurora, Colorado.  She is survived by 11 granddaughters, 11 great-granddaughters and 8 great-grandsons.
The family will celebrate a life well lived with one last rendition of “Too Fat Polka” on an accordion.
The family suggests memorials to Memorial Nursing and Rehabilitation (Activity Fund), 302 E 2nd St, Dumas, TX 79029; or Window on the Plains Museum, 1820 South Dumas Ave., Dumas, TX 79029.

I hope she got to read her obit! She would approve. I’m glad I got to be one of those “younger” friends she made. I really enjoyed my evenings out with some of the Ding Alings. I will miss her.
God bless you as you deal with the loss and celebrate her life!

We lived across the street from Thelma and Duane in the White House for 19 years and had a great time knowing them. We took care of the house and plants while they were gone. Thelma loved to tell the story about looking out and seeing Fred watering her plants in the window box. Obviously, he did not know that they had returned home. We enjoyed the Thelma specialty pizza on birthdays. Also, Max Stephenson, Irene’s dad, was the teacher of that eighth grade class that Thelma was the star student! We loved Miss Thelma! My Deepest Condolences to all the family of Thelma. She will be missed. I am so blessed to have known her and Duane. I always looked forward to seeing them both anywhere they were. I have known them both for quite some time. I was one of their nurses at Dr. Miguel’s office and it was always nice to see them. Thelma would always be baking goodies and spoiling us at the office. Thelma was a very special lady always on the go doing and helping others and always a smile on her face. My thoughts and prayers are with the Smith family. God Bless You All.
