Mr. Terrel Pinkston, 89, of Amarillo, Tx passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Dec. 30, 2022. Terrel was born on December 14, 1933, in Lenorah, Tx to John and Gertie Angel Pinkston and a nine year old sister Marcelle who welcomed him into this world.
Terrel attended school in Stanton, Tx and graduated in 1951. He also attended Tarleton University in Stephenville, Tx.
In 1952 he and some friends of his decided to join the U.S. Navy and see the world. After boot camp, he went to Bainbridge, Maryland to attend Hospital Corp School. After completing Corp School, he was stationed at the Naval Hospital in Corpus Christi, Tx where he married Dorothy Mims on July 18, 1953. He served in Corpus Christi until Feb. 1954. Terrel then received orders to report to Camp Pendleton in California. It was there that he trained to become a corpsman for the Fleet Marines. Terrel spent 15 months in Japan and Hawaii before returning to the States. His next duty station was in Millington, Tn at a Naval Air Station and training center.
Mr. Pinkston received an honorable discharge in 1957.
After his service to this nation, Terrel decided to enter the Crop Insurance Business where he spent 42 years doing that type of work. He was employed by several insurance companies.
During his working career, Terrel was invited to spend some time in Australia working with the Cotton Growers Association. He offered input in drafting an insurance policy for cotton. He also trained agronomist employees to work losses on the cotton crops.
In 1990, Terrel was employed with Rain and Hail Crop Insurance Co. He was transferred to the division office in Amarillo, Tx. as a production manager and later became assistant manager. He retired from the insurance business in 1998.
Mr. Pinkston was preceded in death by his parents John and Gertie, a brother J.T., a sister Marcelle Williams, a brother-in-law Bill Williams, and a daughter-in-law Reneta Pinkston.
Terrel is survived by his wife Dorothy Pinkston of the home, two sons Dan Pinkston of Rincon, Ga, and Bill Pinkston of Rhome, Ga., eleven nieces and nephews, two brothers-in-law Clay Mims of Midland, Tx. and Jack and wife Glena of Midland, Tx., and several cousins and many friends.
Mr. Pinkston served as a Deacon and Elder at Westview Christian Church for many years. He is a member of Washington Avenue Christian Church.
Services for Mr. Pinkston will be held at Washington Avenue Christian Church on Wednesday, January 4, 2023, at 2:30 p.m. Jim Shelburne will be officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors.
