Susan was born September 10, 1931, in Kinston, NC, during the Great Depression, to Marvin and Margaret Matthews. She grew up along the East Coast where her love for the ocean began. Days were spent chasing crabs and enjoying the beautiful state of North Carolina along with her four siblings. As a young adult, she moved to Texas. There she met, as she put it “her long, tall, true love, Texan, Bill McKee.” She and Bill were married on March 26, 1951, in Amarillo, Texas. He preceded her in death on April 1, 1993.
Susan had her calling in life as a devoted wife to Bill and a wonderful stay-at-home mom. They worked hard all year, but always found time to take family vacations to North Carolina or the beaches of Port Aransas. She loved the mountains of Colorado and New Mexico dearly.
After Bill passed away, she began taking ceramics classes. She made award-winning, best of show ceramics in the Tri-State Fair. Her love for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren were her favorite subjects. She enjoyed the beauty of nature, the outdoors, and loved to cook. As time passed, she had one final trip to the coast of Port Aransas with loving children in 2019. Pure joy shown on her face as she put her feet in the warm coastal waters and enjoyed delicious seafood. Her final years were spent at The Craig and most recently, The Ware. Her family would like to thank the staff at both places, along with the staff at BSA Hospice of the SW.
You may be gone Mama, but you will never be forgotten. Your legacy will live on for generations through your children and their families. You will live forever in our hearts until the day comes and we will all be reunited.
She was a member of Arden Road Baptist Church.
Susan also was preceded in death by brothers, Doug and W.C. Howard; sisters, Molly “Pete” Boyd, and Mary “Boogie” Fox; children, Leslie “Stevie” Andrews, and Jamie Riley; a grandson, Donnie White; and daughter-in-law, Cindy McKee.
Survivors include sons, David McKee and wife Cheri, Gene McKee, and Ronnie McKee and wife Paula, all of Amarillo, TX; daughters, Freida McKee, Debbie DeVoid and husband Michael, and Trina French and husband Kenny, all of Amarillo, TX; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
