Sister Mary Viola Baca – September 21, 2017

Sister Mary Viola Baca, 90, of Amarillo , died Thursday, September 21, 2017, after a lengthy illness.
A vigil service with rosary will be at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Sept. 25, 2017, at St. Francis Convent.  Services will be at 1 pm, Tuesday, September 26, 2017, in St. Francis Convent with Bishop Patrick Zurek as celebrant. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery, by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
Sr. Mary Viola (née Leticia Virginia) Baca, was born in Domingo, New Mexico, July 25, 1927, one of nine children born to Elfego Baca and Ignacita Montes.  Sr. Viola entered the Franciscan Sisters of Mary Immaculate in Santa Fe, New Mexico on September 4, 1944, making her first Profession of Vows on August 25, 1947 in Santa Fe.
Sister Viola received her grade school and high school education in Peña Blanca, New Mexico.  After making her first Profession of Vows in Santa Fe, New Mexico, she taught in various schools and served as catechist in Panama, California and Texas for 54 years, retiring in 2000.
Sister Mary Viola was preceded in death by her parents, and her brothers and sisters. Survivors include several nieces and nephews in various states through the country, and their spouses and children.
