Sarah Ruth Wilson – March 4, 2018

Sarah Ruth Wilson, of Amarillo and formerly from Perryton, passed away on March 4 at the age of 88 in Amarillo, Texas. She was born to Edward and Lena Norton in Faulkner, Mississippi on August 13, 1929.  The family moved to Hattiesburg, Mississippi when she was five years old.  She graduated from Oak Grove High School in 1947.  She then pursued a double major in Chemistry and Biology from the University of Southern Mississippi receiving her Bachelor of Science degree in 1950.   She then attended St. Mary’s School of Medical Technology in Kansas City and graduated in 1951 with an ASCP degree as a Medical Technologist.  She began work as a medical technologist in Perryton and worked for Dr. Kengle and Dr. Pearson.  Later she worked with Dr. R.D. Stephenson in a clinic until Ochiltree General Hospital opened in 1967.  When Ochiltree General Hospital opened, she became the Lab supervisor and maintained that position until she retired in 1990.  She also filled in as X-ray technician when needed during her tenure at the hospital.  She was an advocate and volunteer to support Coffee Memorial Blood Center to help replenish the blood supply that was used at the hospital.
She married Floyd Wilson on February 25, 1953 and they celebrated their 54th anniversary before he passed away on March 18, 2007.  They farmed and ranched in southeast Texas County, Oklahoma and they lived in Perryton.  Floyd retired in 1988.  As medical attention dictated, they moved from Perryton to Amarillo in 2004 to be closer to medical facilities and their son.
After Sarah retired from the hospital she spent much of her time growing fruit trees and working in the garden. She was a member of the Iris club and loved canning vegetables and sewing.   She cherished her friendships and spent many hours a day checking on everyone with the phone.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Wilson and her brother, William Dewey Norton of Brandon, Mississippi. She is survived by a son, Olen Wilson and wife Terry of Amarillo and two grandchildren, Kristen Wilson and Rachel Wilson, both of Amarillo.
