Ruby was born in Guymon, Oklahoma on April 29, 1924. She grew up on the family farm outside of Texhoma, Oklahoma in Texas County. She was one of eight children. She attended school in Texhoma where she played basketball and played the clarinet in the marching band. She delighted in teaching her own children how to dribble and shoot. After high school she attended college in Goodwell, Oklahoma for a year until she joined the workforce during World War II. She worked for Boeing in Wichita, Kansas making sure the machine guns were in working order as they were installed in the B-29s. With her brothers being called to military service, she would return home to help her dad plant the crops.
After the war, she met her husband-to-be at the drugstore in Texhoma. They married on 12/26/45 and moved to Amarillo where their two children, Alynda and Robert, were born.
Even as a stay-at-home mom, she was always busy. She became an extraordinary seamstress working on everything from children’s clothes to Paris ballgowns and wedding dresses. Once the children were grown, she became a realtor and full-time caregiver to her husband who passed away in 1981. Throughout the years she was a loving caregiver for many family members.
She took many trips around the world with her friends but fell in love with Line Dancing. She was a member of the 45 Uppers, dancing for many years. She loved her family and was known as “Gee” by all her grandchildren. Ruby was a member of First Baptist Church for 68 years.
She is survived by her daughter, Alynda Best and significant other, Don Rotkopf: grandchildren Brett Best and husband Rodd Hogg, and Trevor Best; by her son Robert Mauldin and his wife, Sherry; grandchildren Ryan Mauldin and his wife Ashley, Ty Mauldin, Kyle Mauldin and Wes Mauldin and his wife Genevieve; by step-son Michael (deceased) and by granddaughters Jenny Turner and Lindsey Mauldin, and grandson Devin and his wife Cindy. There are 6 great grandchildren scattered from Texas to California to Canada and to England. And many beloved nieces and friends. A very proud legacy indeed!
